Position Overview

A Behavioral Resource Technician ("BRT") is responsible for providing safety observation of the patient or patients they are assigned to. The BRT's role is to ensure that the patient does not harm themselves or others. The BRT must maintain a safe environment and interact with the patient, family, and staff in a caring, professional manner. As a member of the healthcare team, the BRT will provide care for the patient and may include bathing, feeding, toileting, ambulating, turning, and repositioning as assigned.

The BRT is responsible for reporting any changes in the patient’s condition or behavior to the nurse immediately and documenting every 15 minutes during their shift.

This description covers the essential functions of the position. The incumbent may perform other similar duties as assigned.

Schedule
  • Part‑time 24 hrs a week (8‑hr shifts)
  • 2nd shift (3 p‑11 30 p)
  • Weekly schedule is not fixed; each week you work different days within a 6‑week published calendar.
  • Every other weekend and holiday rotation required.

Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED (required)
  • 1 year of relevant patient care experience (required). Preference for 2 years working with behavioral health patients.
  • Experience may include working with behavioral health patients, direct patient care, group home setting, paraprofessional role, or BRT apprentice role.
  • Experience as a direct health care provider, previous psych sitter, CNA, MA HHA or PCA.
  • CPR through American Heart Association BLS Provider required.
  • CPI required within 6 months of employment.
Job Responsibilities
  • Provides age‑appropriate care to patients.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of developmental stages for children through older adults.
  • Develops and maintains good human relations skills; introduces self by name to patient, PCT, and RN 100 % of the time.
  • Provides safety observation, intervenes as necessary, and documents patient status every 15 minutes.
  • Acts in a caring, professional manner; assists with bathing, feeding, toileting, ambulating, turning, and repositioning.
  • Follows RN directions regarding patient limitations and privileges.
  • Reduces patients to alternative activities and de‑escalates situations.
  • Reports any significant occurrences in patient’s condition and behavior to RN.
  • Receives report from RN on shift change; reports off to RN and on to incoming BRT 100 % of the time.
  • Maintains a safe environment and identifies ligature and safety risks.

    Ac compasses patient off the unit as directed; remains with patient at all times in these areas.
  • Transports patients in wheelchairs and on stretchers to procedures.
  • Understands care for specific diagnoses (suicidal, eating disordered, withdrawal, PICA, Alzheimer’s, etc.).
  • Communicates to patients that they are a high priority even during busy times.
  • Participates in competency validations, educational activities, and staff meetings.
  • Obtains and maintains competency for one‑to‑one observation based on the Care of the Suicidal Patient policy.
Required Experience

1 year of relevant patient care experience, including the following as applicable:

  • Working with behavioral health patients
  • Direct patient care
  • Group home setting
  • Paraprofessional role
  • BRT Apprentice Role for 1 year
Preferred Experience

2 years of experience working with behavioral health patients.

Skills and Competencies
  • Reading comprehension, writing and following instructions.
Education

GED or HiSET (required).

Certifications
  • Approved Workplace Safety and De‑escalation Training – Baystate Health
  • Basic Life Support – American Heart Association
