DescriptionAbout the NASA Postdoctoral Program
The NASA Postdoctoral Program (NPP) offers unique research opportunities to highly‑talented scientists to engage in ongoing NASA research projects at a NASA Center, NASA Headquarters, or at a NASA‑affiliated research institute. These one‑to‑three‑year fellowships are competitive and are designed to advance NASA’s missions in space science, Earth science, aeronautics, space operations, exploration systems, and astrobiology.
Research area:
Coronal mass ejections (CMEs) are large‑scale magnetized plasma structures ejected from the Sun. CMEs can reach speeds from a few to more than 2000 km/s and they impart energy and momentum to planetary atmospheres and magnetospheres. CMEs also drive fast‑mode magneto hydrodynamic shocks, which accelerate electrons and ions. Experimental and theoretical research is conducted to investigate various aspects of CMEs from their initiation at the Sun, through interplanetary propagation, to the impact on heliospheric structures.
Studies include the shock‑driving capability of CMEs, derived from interplanetary radio emission associated with solar eruptions. Spacecraft data from white‑light coronagraphs and radio instruments are used for these investigations, with an emphasis on space weather studies that relate CME properties to geomagnetic storm intensity and solar energetic particle events.
