Overview
The Northern Recreation & Leisure Services Division seeks an American Sign Language Instructor. The Department of Parks and Recreation, Prince George’s County, Glenn Dale Community Center, is looking for a dedicated and enthusiastic ASL Instructor to join our team and help learners build meaningful communication skills. Responsibilities- Teach American Sign Language courses to students of varying skill levels
- Create a welcoming, inclusive classroom environment that supports diverse learners
- Develop engaging lesson plans that incorporate Deaf culture, history, and real-world communication
- Assess student progress and provide constructive feedback
- Encourage confidence, cultural respect, and a love of learning ASL
Minimum Qualifications
- ASL teaching certification or degree in ASL, Deaf Studies, Education, or a related field
- Experience teaching in academic, community, or online settings
- Native or near-native ASL proficiency

- ASL teaching certification or degree in ASL

Skills And Abilities
- Fluent expressive and receptive skills in American Sign Language
- Effective instructional and classroom management skills
- Ability to design engaging, visually based lesson plans and activities
- Skill in assessing student progress and providing constructive feedback
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills with diverse learners
- Proficiency in using instructional technology and visual learning tools
- Adaptability in teaching methods to accommodate varying learning styles

Work Hours- Any mornings after 9:30 am (except Sundays when closed)
- Any evenings after 5:30 pm (except Sundays when closed)
- Instruction may take place in a classroom, community center, or workplace setting
- Clear visual communication required, including frequent use of ASL, facial expressions, and body language
- Instructor will be positioned so all students have an unobstructed view for effective visual learning; class size up to 10 students
- Classroom environment is inclusive, culturally respectful, and aligned with Deaf-centered communication practices
- Use of visual teaching aids such as videos, presentations, whiteboards, and interactive activities
- Lighting and seating arrangements support visibility and accessibility
- May involve standing, moving around the classroom, and sustained arm and hand movement during instruction
- Schedule may include daytime, evening, or weekend hours depending on instructor availability
