Part Time Fire Safety Lab Technician

Department: Academic Affairs & Workforce Development - College of Public Safety

Reports To: Associate Dean, College of Public Safety

Location: Green Bay

Standard

Hours:

20-24 hours per week. Flexibility required to include other evening and/or weekend hours, as necessary.

Starting Pay Range: $22.26 - $25.39 per hour

Position Summary: Assist with the day‑to‑day operations of the fire safety program, fire safety complex, mobile training units, and remote facilities in accordance with established policies and procedures. Support the maintenance, organization, and appearance of the Fire Training Grounds, fire apparatus, and fire equipment, including routine preventative maintenance of tools, equipment, and facilities used in instruction.

Essential Functions
  • Assist with the application and adherence to policies and procedures while on the Fire Training Grounds or when using Public Safety facilities or equipment; manage the logistics of equipment requests for training and education within the NWTC District; ensure safe operations of equipment and facilities as required by state, industry, and OSHA standards.
  • Support maintenance and inspection of fire facilities and apparatus, equipment and tools, testing fire pumps and aerial devices, ground ladders, SCBA and ensure compliance with NFPA and WI SPS 330 requirements.
  • Perform routine maintenance and inspections of fire facilities, apparatus, equipment and tools, including basic testing of fire pumps, aerial devices, ladders, and SCBA; help ensure compliance with NFPA and WI SPS 330 requirements, including fit testing for students and instructors.
  • Collaborate with instructors to ensure lab equipment supports curriculum needs.
  • Provide input and support in areas of capital and operational planning, such as gathering vendor information or researching equipment.
Minimum Qualifications And Work Experience
  • Associate Degree in Fire Science or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience in Fire Service.
  • Two years of related experience as a professional or volunteer in fire service.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and database information systems.
  • Knowledge of Wisconsin Fire Service training and certification standards.
  • Must hold a valid driver’s license and be insurable under the district’s standard insurance policy terms.
  • Thorough understanding of current fire codes, statutes, guiding WTSB directives and IFSAC requirements.
  • An equivalent combination of education and work experience may be considered.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Class A CDL, Combination Vehicle endorsement preferred.
  • Certified in the State of Wisconsin as a Firefighter Level 1, Firefighter Level 2, Fire Emergency Services Instructor 1 (FESI‑1) preferred.

  • Mobility:

    Proficiency in using hands and fingers to handle or operate office equipment, tools, controls, and/or heavy equipment and machinery; capability to push, pull, and/or maneuver equipment as needed.
  • PPE:
    Ability to wear and work in personnel protective equipment as needed.
  • Heavy Lifting:
    Capability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds regularly, and occasionally up to 100 pounds with assistance.
  • Visual and Auditory:
    Ability to read documents and communicate effectively with students and staff.
