SUMMARY

This mid-level position is responsible for performing analytical testing for chemical attributes of raw materials and finished products using defined methods and procedures. This testing is done to show compliance with specifications and to ensure the quality of materials. Test methods are of higher complexity than the methods performed by Quality Control Chemist I and require a broader understanding of analytical chemistry and a variety of instrumentation.

This position will also assist in investigating testing/method issues, as well as OOS investigations. Quality Control Chemist IIs will also participate in a wide scope of laboratory projects under the direction of a more experienced chemist or supervisor.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Perform testing of raw materials and finished products. This testing will consist of wet chemistry and analytical chemistry techniques.
  • Set up, adjust, and operate several types of laboratory instrumentation – HPLC, HPLC-MS, GC-FID, GC-MS, ICP, UV-Vis, HPTLC, FTIR, and TOC, among others.
  • Perform sample preparation procedures using several techniques such as: extraction, sonication, solvent evaporation, dilution, and filtration.
  • Perform analytical testing according to written SOP's. Testing is performed with precision, accuracy, and completed on time.
  • Review and write laboratory documents using Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Peer review and approval of documentation for compliance with SOPs and written specifications.
  • Interpret, report, and review test results from contract laboratories.
  • Maintain neat, accurate, and complete records such that they are defendable through an audit.
  • Perform calibration, verification, and routine maintenance of laboratory equipment.
  • Report final test results in the computerized Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).
  • Operate several types of computerized data handling systems.
  • Initiate and lead OOS investigation when test results do not comply with specifications.
  • Effectively communicate with multiple departments within the organization.
  • Consult with other laboratory staff when issues with test methods arise.
  • Revise existing SOPs when needed.
  • Troubleshoot and solve problems encountered with methods and instrumentation.
  • Assist in method transfers and method validation.
  • Perform annual instrument qualifications.
  • Contribute to projects under the direction of a more experienced chemist or supervisor.
  • Identify and implement continuous improvement opportunities.
  • Show ability to train new chemists.
  • Perform other laboratory-related duties or tests as assigned by the immediate supervisor.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Bachelor's degree in Chemistry or related field from four-year College or university; and 5+ years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

OTHER

SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Knowledge and application of cGMPs and FDA regulations is preferred.
  • Experience working in a regulated industry a plus.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office is a plus.
  • Time management skills are important.
  • Ability to work under minimal supervision is needed.
  • May involve travel once a year.
