The Seasonal Maintenance Employee supports the daily operations of the Animal Care Department by performing a variety of outdoor maintenance, custodial, and various animal husbandry tasks. This public-facing role is critical to maintaining the cleanliness, functionality, and appearance of animal enclosures and certain visitor areas, providing quality reliable care for all on-site animals, while also ensuring a welcoming and informative experience for sanctuary guests.
The ideal candidate is dependable, has experience in an animal care or environmental related field, enjoys working outdoors in variable weather conditions, and possesses excellent customer service skills.

- Perform routine outdoor maintenance and cleaning of animal enclosures and exhibit areas.
- Assist in general animal care facility upkeep, including the exhibit/enclosure surrounding trail maintenance, groundskeeping, and trash removal.
- Operate and maintain grounds equipment such as mowers, trimmers, blowers, power washers and other power tools.
- Drive city vehicles and maintenance equipment as needed for daily tasks.
- Provide support to senior animal care staff with animal exhibit maintenance and husbandry duties (including cleaning/diet prep/etc) as assigned.
- Carry out limited indoor custodial work (restrooms, visitor areas, staff facilities).
- Care for captive wildlife following established best practices, including feeding, cleaning, and habitat monitoring.
- May handle or assist with ambassador animals in public-facing or rehabilitative care scenarios.
- Serve as an approachable and knowledgeable resource for sanctuary visitors, providing directions or general information.
- Ensure a positive, safe, and educational experience for all guests.
- Minimum age requirement of 18
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Prior experience in outdoor maintenance, animal care, or related field preferred.
- Valid Wisconsin driver's license and good driving record
- A combination of equivalent experience and/or education may be considered.
- Knowledge of botany, horticulture, and wildlife practices.
- Skill and ability in safely operating vehicles and equipment.
- Ability to work within a group setting.
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team and maintain effective working relationships.
- Ability to work the required hours of the position.
- Lifting and carrying up to 0 pounds.
- Frequent walking, standing, bending, twisting, squatting, crouching, and kneeling.
- Occasional sitting, climbing, pushing, and pulling.
- Ability to work in varied environmental conditions.
