JOB REQUIREMENTS

W.E. Hoban Company is looking for an Associate Tooling Engineer to join our team! The Associate Tooling Engineer supports the design, development, maintenance, and continuous improvement of forging tooling for hammer and press operations. This role works closely with senior engineers, tool room personnel, and production teams to ensure tools are properly designed, documented, and maintained for safe and efficient forging.

The ideal candidate is hands‑on, detail‑oriented, and eager to learn the technical aspects of forging and tooling systems in a fast‑paced forging manufacturing environment.

Key Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assist in the design and modification of forge tooling for hammer and press operations using CAD software.
  • Support tooling trials, inspections, and failure investigations to ensure optimal tool life and performance.
  • Update and maintain tooling drawings, specifications, and process documentation.
  • Collaborate with manufacturing, maintenance, and quality teams to troubleshoot tooling‑related issues and drive root cause analysis.
  • Work with vendors and toolmakers on outsourced tooling needs, including material specifications and heat treatment requirements.
  • Participate in forging die setup and validation activities under the direction of senior engineers.
  • Contribute to cost reduction and efficiency initiatives related to tool design and usage.
  • Maintain and track tool usage, inventory, and wear data using internal systems.
  • Support the standardization and continuous improvement of tooling designs and processes.
  • Ensure compliance with safety standards and forge shop procedures during tooling activities.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by supervisor/manager based on business needs.
Required

Skills and Abilities
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English, with excellent communication skills.
  • Basic understanding of forging processes, metal forming, and tooling design principles.
  • Proficiency in CAD software (Solid Works, AutoCAD, or similar) for tooling design.
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills.
  • Effective communication skills and ability to collaborate across departments.
  • Familiarity with ISO
    9001 and IATF 16949 manufacturing standards is a plus.
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings, material specifications, and manufacturing standards.
  • Basic understanding of tool steels, heat treatment processes, and wear mechanisms.
  • Hands‑on aptitude with a willingness to spend time on the shop floor supporting tooling trials and production.
  • Ability to manage time effectively across multiple projects and priorities.
Education and Experience

Associate’s Degree in mechanical design and/or engineering, Bachelor’s Degree preferred. Relevant internships or co‑op experience in a metalworking, forging or manufacturing setting is a plus. 0–3 years of experience in the design and development of tooling.

Schedule

Monday through Friday from 7:30 am – 4:30 pm or 8 am – 5 pm.
