The Cataloging Librarian adds bibliographic records and associated items to the library catalog, making sure that customers can find what they are searching for in the catalog and providing consistent ways of locating items on library shelves. They assist with the day-to-day operations of the Technical Services department and work under the supervision of the Collection Development Manager.

  • Maintains the library catalog.
  • Ensures that each item has a complete and accurate record in the catalog.
  • Uses knowledge of cataloging rules and techniques to match items with master records from OCLC.
  • Imports and customizes MARC records from OCLC and vendors.
  • Assigns call numbers and other classification to titles.
  • Makes changes to information about item holdings, such as home location.
  • Generates identifying labels for each item.
  • Creates original cataloging and upgrades copy catalog records.
  • Maintains professional cataloging standards, including monitoring and staying current with OCLC, USMARC, RDA, LCSH, DDC, AACR

  • Recommends the adoption of bibliographic maintenance standards and authorities in an automated environment.
  • Assists as needed with physically processing materials.
  • Assists with answering basic cataloging questions.
  • Assist with other department functions.
  • Serve on system-wide committees as assigned or required.
  • Make recommendations for improved work efficiencies to improve customer service or processing times.
  • Assist with large-scale projects and events.
  • Attend and participate in staff and departmental meetings, as well as training sessions.
  • Reads professional journals and other materials to keep informed of the latest developments in the field.
Education and Experience

A master's degree in Library Science/Information Science from an ALA-accredited college or university, plus two years of professional library experience; or a bachelor's degree plus five years of professional library experience; or any equivalent combination of training, education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

Licenses and Certifications
  • Valid Wisconsin Driver’s License
  • Demonstrate knowledge of standard cataloging rules and techniques.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of public library principles, practices and techniques.
  • Effectively administer Brown County Library policies and procedures.
  • Identify problems and take action to develop appropriate solutions, or refer to a supervisor when necessary.
  • Effectively coordinate and direct the work of others.
  • Maintain a calm demeanor under stressful or unsettling circumstances.
  • Demonstrate strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Represent the Library in a responsible, professional and trustworthy manner.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative and courteous working relationships with staff and a diverse customer base.
  • Work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Appropriately multitask and prioritize.
  • Work efficiently while paying close attention to detail.
  • Follow detailed verbal and written instructions.
  • Meet the flexible scheduling needs of the Library.
  • Adapt to changes in the work environment.
  • Effectively use general office equipment and software, including but not limited to computer, printer, photocopier, telephone, cash drawer, audio-visual equipment, word processing, and email.
  • Demonstrate proficient technology skills, including but not limited to working with the library specific software and databases.
