Maintenance Technician/Water Systems Tech I-IV - Wastewater Collections
Job Summary – The City of Greeley is seeking a Maintenance Technician or Water Systems Technician I–IV to join the Wastewater Collections team in the Water and Sewer Department. The Technician will report to the Crew Supervisor I – Wastewater Collections and will assist in the routine maintenance of sanitary sewer lines and related equipment and facilities. Key responsibilities include inspecting, repairing, and performing preventive maintenance on sanitary sewer lines, operating various equipment, keeping maintenance logs, and participating in stand‑by duty for emergency call‑in on a rotational basis.
The role requires field work involving confined spaces, excavation trenches, and operation of heavy equipment.
- High school diploma or equivalent (required for licensure in the State of Colorado).
- Basic understanding of utility maintenance work methods, materials, and equipment (e.g., metal detectors, measuring instruments, shovels, probe rods, dump trucks, heavy equipment).
- Must be available for on‑call duty as part of a rotational schedule, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Willingness to respond to after‑hour emergencies within 45 minutes, even if not on call.
- Current Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) or ability to obtain within 6–9 months of hire.
- 1 month of related experience.
- Class A CDL required.
- Wastewater Collection System Operator 1 certification.
- 2 years of related experience.
- Class A CDL required.
- Wastewater Collection System Operator 2 certification.
- 3 years of related experience.
- Class A CDL required.
- Wastewater Collection System Operator 3 certification.
- 4 years of related experience.
- Class A CDL required.
- Wastewater Collection System Operator 4 certification.
- Any combination of related education, experience, certifications and licenses that will allow a candidate to perform the essential functions of the job.
- Possession of a valid driver’s license.
- Prior water, sewer, or streets maintenance related experience.
- Prior mechanical experience.
- Prior experience working in a heavy traffic environment.
- Flagger or Traffic Control certification.
- Confined Space Entry training or certification.
Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of confined space entry, traffic control, trench safety, and other utility safety procedures.
- Knowledge of water system construction, repair, and preventive maintenance practices.
- Ability to read and interpret maps, electrical schematics, and technical drawings.
- Familiarity with hand tools, power tools, and maintenance equipment.
- Ability to respond to water system emergencies and participate in on‑call rotations.
- Ability to adapt to changing priorities and respond to emergencies.
- Knowledge of workplace safety practices and procedures.
- Skill in operating maintenance tools and equipment safely and effectively.
- Basic computer skills for work order systems, email, and documentation.
- Record‑keeping and documentation skills, including use of utility work order systems.
- Time‑management skills to complete multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
- Strong communication and teamwork skills.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Positive, professional attitude while working with staff and the public.
- Computer skills, including Microsoft Office, City Works or similar program, and ability to learn new software.
- Regular travel within the county and nearby cities; personal or City fleet vehicle may be required.
- Perform routine maintenance of sanitary sewer lines and related equipment.
- Inspect and perform necessary repairs and preventive maintenance on sanitary sewer lines.
- Work in confined spaces, excavation trenches, and near heavy equipment.
- Operate various equipment.
- Create and maintain logs on maintenance, corrections, ordering supplies, and installation of replacement parts.
