JOB SUMMARY
The City of Greeley is seeking a Forestry Maintenance Technician II to perform skilled tree work on city-owned trees. Follows directives of the Forestry Crew Supervisor on daily assignments. Prunes, removes, grinds stumps, plants, waters and fertilizes trees. Operates machinery needed in the maintenance of trees including mini-loader, brush chipper, chain saws, tree spades, skid loaders, hydraulic pumps and a variety of trailers.
Maintains equipment for daily use. May assist with training of crews and inspecting contract landscape installations. Performs 24-hour emergency storm response and snow removal duties in coordination within the Culture, Parks and Recreation Department. Maintains a safe, clean and organized working environment.
- BS Degree in Forestry, Botany, Arboriculture, or related field is desired.
- ISA or other trade related certifications or ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire.
- Current with CPR/First Aid Training
- 3+ years progressive arboricultural experience desired.
- Valid driver’s license and good driving record.
- Knowledge in the use of power saws, brush chippers and other tree maintenance equipment.
- Knowledge of tree transplanting equipment and planting techniques.
- Knowledge of common tree diseases, treatments and mitigation.
- Ability to identify local tree species during all seasons.
- Ability to identify common, local insect species.
- Basic computer skills desired with ability to maintain and access accurate records.
- Must have strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Deal effectively with upset and irate citizens.
- Operate power equipment used for tree maintenance.
- Operate hand tools, power tools, light trucks and tractors.
- Apply pesticides and other chemical agents.
- Perform strenuous labor in all types of weather.
- Follow instructions both verbally and in writing.
- Work independently as well as with others.
- Follow established safety policies and practices.
- Exposure to all weather conditions;
- Exposure to machinery noise;
- Exposure to hazardous chemicals;
- May be required to work at heights over 20 feet;
- May be required to lift or move heavy objects of 50 lbs. or more;
- Work hours may extend beyond 8 hours per day/40 hours per week on occasion.
- Vision enough to identify tree species, tree conditions at a distance - often over 200 feet;
- Manual dexterity enough to operate tools, vehicles and equipment;
- Flexible enough to bend, twist and reach as to load and unload equipment, supplies and tools;
- Ability to move over rough, uneven and rocky surfaces in performance of grounds maintenance or inspections;
- Stamina and strength enough to lift or move up to 50 lbs. or more.
