Position: Chief of Simulation/Open-Rank Clinical Faculty

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Chief of the Office of Simulation Education will report to the Associate Dean of Clinical Education, with a collaborative, lateral relationship to the Chair of Primary Care or other relevant department(s) involved in clinical skills instruction. This structure is designed to support cross-curricular coordination, academic integration, and operational alignment across departments. The Chief of the Office of Simulation Education will hold a faculty appointment, which is essential for teaching, assessment, and participation in academic governance.

This position may be filled by either a contract renewable or tenure-track faculty member, to be determined at the point of offer after consideration of applicable experience and credentials. Individuals who currently hold tenure at a regionally accredited institution may be recommended for tenure or retreat rights at UNC following consultation with appropriate faculty groups and university administration, and upon approval by the Board of Trustees.

Academic rank and salary will depend upon the selected applicant’s current rank and experience.

The Chief of the Office of Simulation Education will lead the development and operations of the simulation program at a newly established osteopathic medical school. This includes standardized patient (SP) encounters, high-fidelity mannikin-based scenarios, procedural skills training, and coordination of interprofessional simulation events. This position will work closely with clinical and pre-clinical faculty to ensure that simulation experiences align with the educational goals of the curriculum and reflect best practices in health professions education.

Applicants will have a background in medical education, with strong organizational and leadership skills. The position includes supplemental teaching in clinical labs and/or case-based learning settings, oversight of simulation center operations and personnel, budget management, and contributions to student assessment and faculty development.

Successful candidates will join a dynamic and growing team dedicated to providing an innovative, student-centered curriculum. Responsibilities include teaching in an active learning environment, contributing to curriculum development, conducting research, and participating in service activities that support the mission of the college.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

Simulation Program Oversight (50%)

Maintain, budget oversight for the simulation center as aligned with UNC COM priorities and submit budget requests at least annually.

Plan, schedule and manage simulation activities (to include, but not limited to, standardized patients, high fidelity mannikins, task trainers and virtual simulation software).

Supervise simulation staff to include technicians and standardized patient personnel, through hiring, training and termination.

Work with UNC COM Information Technology staff to maintain simulation center readiness for training, including simulation center assessment software.

Oversee the maintenance of simulation operations and equipment readiness.

Maintain, current and accurate inventory of all simulation-related equipment and software.

Managing and track applicable warranties on all simulation equipment and software.

Manage simulation equipment vendor relationship in coordination with the UNC Facilities Department and the Office of Purchasing.

Estimate wear and tear costs and depreciation of use of simulation equipment.

Determine purchasing needs for future equipment.

Work with other faculty to create simulation cases for high fidelity mannikins, standardized patients encounters and virtual simulations.

Evaluate opportunities for future external simulation training opportunities in addition

to College of Osteopathic Medicine students.

Identify and develop methods to design and build future procedural task trainers in-house at the UNC COM.

Assist other faculty in designing and supporting OSCEs and simulation-based student assessments including grading and remediation planning ensuring assessment reliability and standardization.

Participate in simulation OSCEs in a faculty role, as needed.
