About the PositionThis is entry-level, responsible security work involving the protection of County courthouses and facilities. Incumbents in this class of work patrol and monitor an assigned facility to prevent security breaches, theft, vandalism, and personal injury to visitors. Tasks include ensuring that facilities are secured and that security systems are operational; observing, resolving, and reporting any unusual conditions or activities; monitoring and controlling visitor and employee access to buildings, grounds, and parking areas;
offering information; directing or escorting parties to appropriate destinations and unlocking doors and gates.
The Prince George's County Office of the Sheriff has been a vital link in the criminal justice system for more than 300 years, providing the citizens of Prince George’s County with professional, transparent, and effective law enforcement service. The Office of the Sheriff serves as the law enforcement arm of the courts, responding to domestic violence calls, processing warrants, civil papers, domestic violence peace and protective orders, Emergency Psychiatric Petition (E.P.S.) orders, and the execution of evictions.
The Office of the Sheriff is also responsible for court security, providing security and protection for visitors to our courthouses and securing courtrooms and holding areas. Deputies transport prisoners and are responsible for extraditing fugitives from other states.
- Maintains secure control of courthouse and justice center:
Assists with patrolling County courthouses, office buildings, facilities, grounds, parking lots, and other sites in conformance with established procedures; safeguards against fire, theft, and acts of vandalism or disturbance, reporting any irregularities. - Maintains checkpoints to assist persons entering facilities for authorized purposes and to deny entry to unauthorized persons.
- Monitors County facilities using surveillance equipment to identify local security breaches and incidents and determines the appropriate course of action.
- Ensures all doors, gates, and windows are properly locked and fully secure.
- Operates and monitors all equipment, alarm panels, computer terminals, and apparatus utilized by building security; assists with locking and securing buildings and/or facilities within assigned areas; enforces County laws and ordinances, administrative rules, and regulations within an assigned area; directs and controls the flow of incoming visitors to security checkpoints; instructs visitors to place handbags, briefcases, and packages to be scanned by x-ray machines.
- Notifies, responds to, and handles emergency or unusual incidents:
Maintains a required record of shift activity and submits written reports; assists with operating and monitoring security equipment, including walk-throughs and hand-held metal detectors; demonstrates knowledge of and follows S.O.P.s relative to emergency or unusual incidents; uses good judgment and maintains composure under pressure; performs other related duties as assigned.
- High School diploma or GED.
- Six (6) months of work experience involving public contact in a variety of circumstances, preferably in a security‑related role.
- Possess a valid state‑issued driver's license.
