About the Position

This is a senior/lead inspection and code enforcement work to ensure compliance with animal control codes, ordinances and standards. Incumbents train and provide guidance to lower-level Animal Control Officers, handle a caseload of the more difficult and non-routine code enforcement, inspectional and investigative cases. A significant aspect of work involves explaining codes, ordinances and regulations to animal owners and the public in order to resolve problems and to promote the animal control program.

Work assignments require independent judgement and action in accordance with applicable codes and established guidelines. Work is performed under general supervision of higher-level Animal Control Officers or supervisory position. The incumbent will perform difficult, complex and non-routine code enforcement, inspectional and investigative assignments within the animal control program. Makes on site field inspections of kennels, pet grooming salons, pet shops and veterinary hospitals to determine if animals and their environments are being maintained.

Handles, catches, restrains and places animals in cages, vehicle or holding facility. Investigates complaints regarding sick, diseased or injured animals considered to be a risk to public safety. Testifies at hearings/in court proceedings in order to provide pertinent evidence/information/testimony regarding the adjudication of code violation cases/complaints. Willingly and cooperatively performs tasks and duties which may not be specifically listed in the class specification or position description.

The Department of the Environment works for a healthy, beautiful and sustainable County through programs that provide clean water, flood control, recycling and waste management, litter prevention, sustainable animal management and pet adoption in partnership with residents and other stakeholders. Some of our core services include providing clean water services (Stormwater Management Division); flooding prevention for buildings and structures (Sustainability Division and Stormwater Management Division);

collecting, processing and diverting waste from the County-operated landfill, commercial facilities and householders (Resource Recovery Division); providing sustainability services to reduce greenhouse gas and emission (Sustainability Division); and facilitating pet adoptions, managing an animal holding facility, issuing pet licenses, investigating cruelty complaints and conducting humane outreach and education events (Animal Services Division).

  • Performs difficult, complex and non-routine code enforcement, inspectional and investigative assignments within the animal control program.
  • Makes on site field inspections of kennels, pet grooming salons, pet shops and veterinary hospitals in order to determine if animals and their environments are being maintained in conformance with applicable animal control codes and ordinances.
  • Handles, catches, restrains and places animals in cage, vehicle or holding facility in order to execute appropriate actions, directives and programs as mandated by applicable codes.
