The Prince George’s County Department of The Environment is currently seeking qualified applicants to fill a Dispatcher (Radio Dispatcher-A) grade A12 position, in the Animal Services Division
.
This is routine communication and dispatch work involving the receipt, evaluation, and transmission of information between a centralized communication center and field personnel via two-way radio, telephone, and other communication systems. The role requires maintaining detailed records of calls, site assignments, unit availability, and service responses to ensure accountability and operational efficiency. Serving as the primary point of contact for dispatching personnel and relaying critical updates, the incumbent plays a vital role in ensuring timely and accurate information flow between internal staff, field units, and the public.
The position requires strong multitasking skills, situational awareness, and sound judgment under pressure, particularly during high-volume or time-sensitive operations. Duties include monitoring field activity, maintaining detailed dispatch logs, tracking assignments, and following established protocols to ensure consistent and efficient service delivery. Work is performed under the general supervision of a division head and evaluated on the effectiveness of operations.
The Department of the Environment works for a healthy, beautiful and sustainable County through programs that provide clean water, flood control, recycling and waste management, litter prevention, sustainable animal management and pet adoption in partnership with residents and other stakeholders. Some of our core services include providing clean water services (Stormwater Management Division); flooding prevention for buildings and structures (Sustainability Division and Stormwater Management Division);
collecting, processing and diverting waste from the County-operated landfill, commercial facilities and householders (Resource Recovery Division); providing sustainability services to reduce greenhouse gas and emission (Sustainability Division); and facilitating pet adoptions, managing an animal holding facility, issuing pet licenses, investigating cruelty complaints and conducting humane outreach and education events (Animal Services Division).
- Receives and records incoming service requests from call takers and other sources regarding environmental issues or animal control issues and complaints.
- Dispatches calls for service and other information to Animal Control Officers and environmental enforcement staff, monitoring radio communications throughout the shift.
- Provides veterinary clinic and animal hospital locations to officers for injured or sick animals and coordinates with kennel staff for intake.
- Issues and maintains records of Center for Disease Control (CDC) numbers for animals to be tested for animal borne diseases like rabies; records result and informs supervisors of positive findings and other required statistical information.
- Coordinates with other agencies including Public Safety, the Health Department, and Social Services to address incidents or service needs.
- Notifies appropriate supervisors or authorities during emergencies, unusual events, or equipment malfunctions.
