The Prince George’s County Department of The Environment is currently seeking qualified applicants to fill a Property Attendant-A grade A04 position, in the Sustainable Waste Management Division/Disposal Section
.

About the Position

This is routine work in safeguarding buildings and equipment against damage, loss and vandalism. Some judgment and discretion is involved in dealing with emergencies that may arise and in reporting irregularities to proper authorities. General supervision is received from a superior to whom difficult situations may be referred.

About the Agency

The Department of the Environment works for a healthy, beautiful and sustainable County through programs that provide clean water, flood control, recycling and waste management, litter prevention, sustainable animal management and pet adoption in partnership with residents and other stakeholders. Some of our core services include providing clean water services (Stormwater Management Division); flooding prevention for buildings and structures (Sustainability Division and Stormwater Management Division);

collecting, processing and diverting waste from the County-operated landfill, commercial facilities and householders (Resource Recovery Division); providing sustainability services to reduce greenhouse gas and emission (Sustainability Division); and facilitating pet adoptions, managing an animal holding facility, issuing pet licenses, investigating cruelty complaints and conducting humane outreach and education events (Animal Services Division).

  • This is routine work in safeguarding buildings and equipment against damage, loss and vandalism. Some judgment and discretion is involved in dealing with emergencies that may arise and in reporting irregularities to proper authorities. General supervision is received from a superior to whom difficult situations may be referred.
  • Makes rounds of assigned buildings and areas, watches for prowlers, fire, or any other danger of loss or damage to property and equipment.
  • Acts as security guard of county property, ensures that cars are out of the area by closing time, and secures and locks main gates at closing time.
  • Receives questions or complaints regarding waste collection activities and related emergency or complaint calls; oversees unloading of equipment or supplies delivered.
  • Operates street flusher tank vehicle as first line of defense in case of brush or emergency fires.
  • Willingly and cooperatively performs tasks and duties which may not be specifically listed in the class specification or position description, but which are within the general occupational category and responsibility level typically associated with the employee's class of work.
  • Completion of six (6) school grades with some experience as a watchman or security guard.

Any equivalent combination of relevant training, education and experience may also be considered.

  • Meet all training and performance standards and demonstrate proficiency as required by the agency.
  • Wear and use agency protective apparel and equipment in the performance of their assigned duties, if applicable.
  • Successfully pass preemployment checks which may include reference checks, background investigations, and drug screenings, where applicable.
  • Be willing and able to serve as an essential employee. Essential employees are expected to report during standard or non-standard hours as operations necessitate, or during emergencies. Essential employees are expected to report or remain at work when other County employees are granted Administrative Leave.
  • Working knowledge of buildings and grounds patrolled and the rules and regulations governing admission to and departure from such properties.
  • Ability to exercise alertness and judgment to detect, and if necessary, to report probable danger of loss or injury to life or property.
  • Ability to deal effectively with prowlers and trespassers.
