Job SummaryThe School Site Assistant – Substitute supports daily meal service, food preparation, and customer service at an assigned school site. Duties include meal counting, POS transactions and cash handling, food safety and sanitation, and collaboration with the School Site Lead and school personnel.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Meal Service & Food Preparation:
Assist in preparing and serving meals according to standardized recipes and portion control; present meals attractively; set up and break down service lines efficiently. - Customer Service & Student Support:
Provide excellent customer service to students and staff; accommodate allergies and special dietary needs; maintain a welcoming food service environment. - Meal Counting & Financial Transactions:
Accurately count and record meals; operate POS system and handle cash responsibly; assist with end‑of‑day reconciliation and reporting. - Kitchen Cleaning & Food Safety:
Maintain cleanliness of kitchen and storage; follow all food safety and sanitation protocols; assist with dishwashing, sweeping, mopping, and sanitizing surfaces. - Collaboration & Inventory Support:
Work closely with the School Site Lead and school personnel; receive work directives; verify and store food deliveries; track inventory usage and report shortages. - Additional Responsibilities:
Attend meetings, trainings, and professional development; follow district policies; perform other duties assigned by the Executive Director.
- High school diploma or equivalent (required).
- Experience in food service, preferably in a school or institutional setting.
- Experience with POS systems and cash handling (preferred).
- Strong understanding of food safety regulations and sanitation practices.
- Excellent customer service and communication skills.
- Ability to operate POS system and manage financial transactions accurately.
- Ability to take work direction and collaborate with team members.
- Valid California Food Handler’s Certification (or ability to obtain within 30 days).
- TB and criminal justice fingerprint clearance.
- Physical demands: lift up to 50 pounds; frequent standing, walking, bending and lifting; exposure to varying temperatures.
