Overview

Wieland is a global leader in copper and copper alloy manufacturing, processing, and distribution. The Local Driver will be responsible for transporting raw materials and manufactured products across the United States and globally, making local deliveries within 150 miles of our campus in Granite City, IL.

This is a full‑time, on‑site role with a weekly pay schedule.

Pay & Schedule

Hourly Pay Range: $25/hr - $30/hr with a $0.55 - $0.60 CPM.

Work Schedule:

6:00 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. Pay

Responsibilities
  • Inspect vehicles for mechanical items and safety issues with correct documentation.
  • Comply with DOT rules and regulations as well as with company policies and procedures.
  • Maneuver trucks into loading or unloading positions.
  • Collect and verify delivery instructions.
  • Report defects, accidents, or violations.
  • Ensure trailers are locked out and chocked before loading/unloading.
  • Maintain driver log according to DOT regulations.
  • Maintain contact with supervisor, dispatcher, and scale house operator to receive work instructions.
  • Work in a timely, safe, and responsible manner to meet customer or company requirements.
Qualifications
  • Must be at least 22 years old, have a minimum of 5 years of experience, and possess a valid Class A CDL license.
  • Clean driving record. Not cited for a DOT‑defined accident in the previous three years.
  • Ability to pass the DOT physical and drug screen.
  • Knowledge of and compliance with company policy and all federal, state, and local laws and regulations governing the operation of company equipment.
  • Good communication skills; conveys information clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing; adjusts communication to meet the needs of the audience.
  • Ability to read and understand documents such as BOLs, freight logs, and intermodal transit documents, safety rules, operating, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to use a digital camera and upload pictures according to company standards.
  • Adapts to change quickly and easily and performs effectively during times of change; demonstrates the ability to multitask and manage competing priorities effectively.
  • Ability to learn quickly in a fast‑paced environment.
  • Demonstrates strong analytical thinking and problem‑solving skills.
  • Extensive knowledge of applicable truck driving rules and regulations.
  • Adaptability and foresight to handle unexpected situations (traffic, weather conditions, etc.).
  • Be a safety champion by promoting a safe and productive workplace through your own actions, including the proper use of PPE, safe operation of powered equipment, and safe lifting techniques as determined by the role.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee will be required to move frequently, stand, walk, and sit. The employee must be able to regularly lift and/or move up to 50 lbs. and open containers.
  • Our drivers routinely climb in and out of the truck cab to service customer accounts and at times need to climb onto the truck containers to smooth loads or secure tarps for transport. The position involves lifting (up to 50 lbs.), pushing, pulling, and bending.
  • Manually open and close trailer doors (approx. 25‑50 lbs.). Secure doors with chain and binder (approx. 25‑50 lbs.).
  • Manually dolly up and down trailer dolly legs (approx. 50‑75 lbs.).
  • Climb up fixed trailer ladder on the front of the trailer nose and use crane bar handle to physically roll or unroll manual trailer tarps (approx. 75‑100 lbs.).
  • Manually swing multiple roof bow headers to one side of the trailer by removing and reinstalling pin‑and‑hinge assemblies (approx. 75‑100 lbs.).
  • Perform manual brake adjustments on slack adjusters requiring squatting or kneeling under the trailer (approx. 25‑50 lbs.).
  • Perform manual sliding of trailer tandems by pulling trailer slider bar to release the tandem pins (approx. 75‑100 lbs.).
