Adoptive Family Support Network presents the Adoptive Parent Consultant – Level I position in Wayne County. This role is part‑time (18–20 hours per week) and hybrid, with limited travel to Grand Rapids and other parts of Michigan as required. Compensation ranges from $18.00 to $20.00 per hour.
Position SummaryThe Adoptive Parent Consultant partners with adoptive parents to provide support, information, and community resources. Services are delivered via phone, text, direct messaging, email, video conferencing, or in person. Key responsibilities include moderating virtual support groups, facilitating or assisting parent partners and agencies to develop support groups, listening reflectively and responding to parents’ needs, collaborating with community partners, and engaging in continuous learning to serve adoptive families.
EssentialResponsibilities
- Respond to contacts, provide support and resources, and follow up in a timely manner.
- Develop inclusive and equitable relationships with adoptive families, community partners, colleagues, and public and private agencies.
- Organize and host recruitment and retention activities that are client‑driven, culturally relevant, and accessible.
- Facilitate or develop community‑based support groups.
- Collaborate with team members to ensure culturally responsive care and programming.
- Identify local and regional resources relevant to adoptive families.
- Participate in ongoing learning opportunities, problem‑solving, and knowledge exchange with other APCs and parent leaders across Michigan.
- Demonstrate sensitivity to cultural, ethnic, and linguistic differences.
- Participate in AFSN team meetings twice per month (virtually) and twice annually in person.
- Attend bi‑weekly supervisory meetings with the AFSN Supervisor.
- Document client data and contacts per AFSN specifications.
- Maintain a monthly log of community events and activities hosted or attended.
- Act as a cultural bridge among youth, families, and community groups from diverse backgrounds.
- Participate in boards or committees to build community partnerships.
- Travel to mandatory meetings or training and community events as necessary.
- High‑school diploma or equivalent.
- Three years of lived experience participating in adoption, guardianship, or foster parenting in Michigan, another state, or internationally; or equivalently three years of foster or relative caregiver experience.
- Knowledge of community resources and support for adoptive parents.
- Reliable transportation, valid driver’s license, positive driving record, and proof of insurance.
- Sensitivity to clients’ socioeconomic characteristics and ability to build meaningful relationships across cultures.
- Knowledge of cultural values, norms, and practices for key populations served to address disparities.
- Flexible availability for nights and weekends as needed.
- Strong customer service skills, ability to handle multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint, Teams, Outlook) and Salesforce.
- Commitment to the agency’s mission, philosophy, and values.
- Successful completion of ICHAT, National and State Sex Offender Registry and Central Registry clearance (no record of child abuse or neglect).
