Overview
Kent County is excited to announce that the Office of the Public Defender is seeking to hire a Mitigation Specialist. This is a professional role that provides support for attorneys to advocate on behalf of indigent defendants for reduced sentences or alternatives to incarceration.
Mitigation Specialists at the Office of the Public Defender are integral members of the defense team who demonstrate a commitment to serving marginalized persons and communities. Work is performed under general supervision.
Responsibilities- Makes appropriate referrals for individuals' social service needs, including housing, substance abuse and mental health.
- Identifies and conducts interviews with defendant's support system members.
- Develops individualized alternative sentencing plans in consultation with attorney and individuals.
- Advocates to social service agencies on behalf of individuals as needed.
Required:
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in Social Work, Counseling, Psychology, Marriage and Family Counseling or related field.
- One year of relevant professional experience in a social worker role. An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.
- Must possess a valid Michigan Driver’s License.
Preferred:
- Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW) in the State of Michigan with license maintained during employment.
