Position: Govt. Housing - Carpenter
POSITION SUMMARY:

The Carpenter, under the supervision of the Lead Carpenter/Construction Manager is responsible for constructing, erecting, installing and repairing building structures and residential home fixtures in conformance to applicable building codes. The Carpenter plays a crucial role in maintaining and improving the housing infrastructure to ensure safe and habitable living conditions. The Carpenter directly contributes to the preservation and enhancement of tribal housing assets, fostering community well-being and quality of life for residents.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (includes, but is not limited to, the following)
  • Construct, erect, install and repair building structures.
  • Read blue prints and prepare, lay out project, mark and cut, and assemble building materials as needed.
  • Assemble construction and building materials as required.
  • Install building materials on new construction and rehabilitation projects.
  • Request materials for projects from warehouse.
  • Follow established safety rules and building codes.
  • Erect scaffolding.
  • Maintain tools and equipment in good working condition, performing regular inspections and minor repairs as needed.
  • Inspect housing units to identify maintenance needs and prioritize repairs based on urgency and impact on residents.
  • Participate in training and professional development activities to enhance skills and stay current with industry best practice.
  • Communicate effectively with supervisors, coworkers, and residents to coordinate work activities and address concerns.

  • All other job-related duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

May require very heavy lifting objects over 100 pounds with team or dual lifting and frequent lifting/carrying of more than 50 pounds. Physical factors include constant standing, walking; frequent carrying/lifting, pushing/pulling, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crawling, reaching, manual handling, use of hearing, bending; occasional sitting, use of smell, near/midrange/vision, depth perception, and color/field of vision. Working conditions include constant exposure to extreme weather, heat/cold, wet/humidity, noise and vibration and occasional exposure to air quality.

Protective equipment clothing needed to perform job include hard hat, safety glasses, protective footwear and other protective equipment needed to perform functions of position.

REQUIREMENTS:

Education: High School Diploma or equivalent.

Experience: Minimum of two years of residential or commercial construction experience required.

Certification/License: Construction Trade or Technical Certificate preferred. Must have a valid driver's license and be insurable by the Sault Tribe Insurance Department. Must comply with annual driver's license review and insurability standards with the Sault Tribe Insurance Department. Must comply with the Sault Tribe's Drug-Free Workplace Policy which may include random drug tests.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Must have general construction knowledge for new construction and remodeling projects. Must be able to read and interpret documents regarding safety, operating & maintenance instructions and procedures. Must have knowledge and be able to safely use hand and power tools of the trade. Must be able to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with supervisory personnel, coworkers and the general public.

Must have basic math skills. Must be able to organize tasks for completion and be able to work independently. Must be able to handle physically demanding situations.

Native American preferred.
