The Building Mechanic I is responsible for performing basic maintenance, repair, and upkeep of building systems and equipment to ensure a safe, functional, and efficient facility. This entry‑level role supports the facilities team by assisting with routine and responding to service requests under supervision.

This entry‑level role supports the facilities team by assisting with routine tasks and responding to service requests under supervision.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities- Provides maintenance and repair to various city facilities; troubleshoots, calibrates, repairs or replaces components.
- Performs upkeep and repair for plumbing fixtures; troubleshoots, repairs and winterizes plumbing systems.
- Diagnoses and repairs doors; installs a variety of locksets.
- Completes safety trainings to ensure safety for building occupants, visitors and self‑protection from various building hazards; acts as first responder for fire alarms.
- Oversees outside contractor work for projects.
- Enters and receives computer data for work orders, security video monitoring, lighting control, utility readings, materials procurement and weekly timesheets.
- Works with building maintenance trades including plumbing, basic electrical, carpentry and general repairs.
- Reads work orders, manuals, diagrams, blueprints and safety documentation.
- Assists in troubleshooting and problem‑solving building systems.
- Works independently, prioritizes tasks and responds to emergency situations.
- Performs related work as required.
This position requires the selected candidate to complete and pass a Grand Rapids Police background check prior to start date. This check may take up to several weeks to complete and may include:
- Completion of personal history packet to provide information and verification of your education, employment, finances, legal history, motor vehicle operation, references, relatives, residency, and autobiography.
- Review and verification of all documents received.
- Legal, criminal and financial record reviews.
- Reference checks (primary, secondary and tertiary).
- Home visit to include neighbors.
- In‑person interview at the Grand Rapids Police Department.
Education and Experience
- High school diploma (or GED equivalent).
- At least three (2) years of related work experience in a variety of trades or construction work.
- Any equivalent combination of training, education and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities.
- Possession of a valid Michigan driver’s license.
