Overview
This position is part of the Resource Pool/Float Pool and will receive a night shift differential plus incentive pay for Resource Pool. The Registered Nurse (RN) functions primarily in direct patient care and demonstrates “competent” clinical practice. This position triages patients, obtains patient history and vital signs, and assesses patients. Acts independently to initiate immediate care in the absence of a physician in life-threatening situations.
Provides care for both acutely ill and non-acute patients. Performs multiple procedures utilizing both complex and simple nursing skills and assists the physician with their procedures. Provides physical and psychological comfort to the patient, their family, and visitors. Provides discharge and follow-up instructions to the patient and family. Works with multiple types of sophisticated equipment and handles various types of patients in a frequently stressful environment.
The position provides care to patients in the Emergency Department, Medical and Surgical Floors. Travel between My Michigan Health Eastern Region and My Michigan Health Center - Clare may be required.
For casual positions: casual employees have no regularly scheduled work hours, but must fulfill the minimum time commitments of the position for as long as it is held (at least 48 hours per month with 24 hours on weekends and 24 hours on holidays).
Responsibilities- (25%) Performs nursing assessments, intervenes appropriately and promptly, and participates in care planning.
- (25%) Regularly assesses patient’s/client’s needs and provides skilled nursing services as prescribed by the physician-approved plan of care and accepted standards of nursing practice.
- (20%) Processes physician/provider orders accurately, completely, and in a timely manner; follows up regarding medication changes and order clarifications.
- (15%) Evaluates effectiveness of the treatment plan and suggests or facilitates changes to improve patient care.
- (15%) Actively participates in updating/revising the treatment plan in collaboration with other team members using current information.
- Uses physical assessment techniques to identify patients’ physical problems and care needs.
- Recognizes self-limitations and seeks appropriate resources.
- Possesses clinical competence in airway management, cardiac monitoring, IV therapy, blood gas analysis, venipuncture, and physical assessment.
- Reassesses patient health status and identifies significant changes in conditions.
- Individualizes plan of care and coordinates the prescribed plans with orders on the health care team.
- Communicates pertinent aspects of care to patients, families, or other health care workers.
- Initiates home health referrals when appropriate.
- Sets priorities and implements nursing measures in alignment with the plan of care and standard of care.
- Recognizes changes in patient condition and takes action to manage symptoms and promote comfort.
- Demonstrates respect for patient dignity and privacy.
- Documents nursing interventions and patient responses.
- Maintains a safe patient environment and prevents risk situations.
- Provides patient/family education – explains procedures, uses available educational materials, and documents instructions given to family.
- Maintains effective interpersonal skills with customers and assists peers in patient care activities.
- Recognizes stress in others and uses positive coping techniques; prioritizes patient care according to acuity.
- Is accountable for following medical center policy, procedures, and work attendance.
- Participates in continuing education, computer-based learning modules, in-services, and Skills Day.
