6 South specializes in patients with advanced heart failure, pre- or post-heart or lung transplant, Left Ventricular Assist Devices, Intra-Aortic Balloon Pumps, and respiratory failure necessitating BiPAP or Hi-Flo Nasal Cannula. The unit offers a unique environment for new graduate nurses to build a strong foundation in time management and develop critical thinking skills in non-ICU assignments, while also providing an introduction to ICU-level care.
Nurses are trained to manage continuous vasoactive infusions, pulmonary artery catheters, radial arterial lines, central venous catheters, peritoneal dialysis, and utilize Endo Tool for continuous insulin drip therapy.
What staff are saying:
- “One of my favorite memories about this unit was working Christmas one year when the team went into each room singing Christmas carols to the patients.”
- “There is constant change on this unit; 6 South is dynamic, and we are always adapting to a variety of patient populations. 6 South nurses can do anything!”
- “6 South is unique in that we are an acuity-adaptable unit, caring for both ICU and non-ICU patients. Our staff are trained to care for both levels of patients and are skilled in a wide variety of procedures.”
