Overview
Histotech / Grossing Trainee – Grand Rapids, MI, Monday to Friday, 9:00 PM to 5:30 AM.
Employee may be eligible to receive shift differential of 10% for some or all hours worked on second shift and 15% for some or all hours worked on third shift. Additional details on shift differential will be provided if an offer is extended.

- Under general supervision and according to policies and procedures, perform routine and limited non-routine activities involved in the preparation of slides for microscopic evaluation by pathologist(s).
- Capable of performing all duties/responsibilities of a Histology Lab Assistant.
- For Grossing Personnel Trainees – Under the direct supervision of a Pathologist, Pathologist Assistant or Grossing Technician:
- Describe gross anatomic features of routine, uncomplicated surgical specimens, ensuring that all lesions, markings and sutures are mentioned.
- Record measurements, weight, volume and any abnormal findings as applicable.
- Dissect surgical specimens and prepare tissues for histologic processing.
- Escalates non-routine, complicated surgical specimens to a Grossing Technician or Pathologist Assistant.
- For Histotechnician Trainees – Under the direct supervision of a Histotechnician or Histotechnologist:
- Ensure proper tissue processing.
- Performs limited embedding and microtomy.
- Prepare slides for routine Hematoxylin and Eosin staining.
- Perform cover slipping of stained slides either manually or automated.
- Perform limited special stains.
- Perform specimen preparation on non-gynecological specimens, including cytopreparation, staining, cover slipping, etc. after completing training on non-gynecological specimen types. This includes specimen preparation of Fine Needle Aspiration (FNA) specimens.
- Ensure all corporate safety, quality control and quality assurance standards are met.
- Ensure compliance with all local, federal, CLIA and CAP regulations.
- Maintain a clean and well-organized work area.
- Other duties, as assigned by supervisor.
Required
Work Experience:
- If training for grossing, meets all requirements as outlined in corporate Minimum Qualifications for Non-Pathologist Performing Gross Tissue Examinations SOP and 1988 CLIA CFR 493.1489.
- If training for Histology, meets all requirements as outlined in corporate Policy for Minimum Qualifications for Histotechnician and Histology Supervisor.
- Current trainee state licensure, as applicable
Preferred
Work Experience:
- 1 year of histology and/or grossing experience
- Must be able to sit and/or stand for long periods of time.
- Basic knowledge of operating non-complex instrumentation.
- Good clerical, organizational and communication skills.
