Overview
5 West is a smaller unit comprised of 25 beds at Butterworth Hospital supporting our Emergency Department. 5W is a fast-paced unit caring for a wide range of patient populations, providing variety and opportunities to strengthen critical thinking skills while delivering excellent patient care to those needing testing and observation of symptoms. Types of patients include Chest Pain, Heart Failure, Kidney Stones, Psychiatric Diagnosis, GI, Orthopedic, and Neuro for both Acute and Chronic Illness;
Telemetry, IVs, NG/G-tubes, Chest Tubes, Dressing/Wound Care, CT & MRI Patients. 5W Physicians and Advanced Practice Providers remain on the unit for 24-hour accessibility, improving relationships, care team collaboration, and efficiency of patient care.

Scope of workActs as a team member in the delivery of quality patient care under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN) or Provider. Performs basic skills per department guidelines and communicates observations to members of the health care team. Collects and reports physiological, psychological, sociocultural and spiritual needs of patients and families in coordination with and as delineated by the RN or Provider.
Responsibilities include taking vitals, checking blood sugars, bed bathing, ambulating, wound care, catheterization and acting as a safety attendant for patients. Ensures that the required documentation is performed in an accurate and timely manner.
- High School Diploma or equivalent Required
- AHA or ARC Basic Life Support (BLS) Required within 90 days
