Heavy Equipment Mechanic, Diesel Mechanic
Overview
Tech I - Perform all levels of preventative maintenance on Mesa County's fleet of heavy equipment, vehicles, light and medium duty trucks, specialized seasonal equipment and machinery. Job functions include diagnostics and repairs of gasoline and diesel engines, power train components, hydraulic systems, A/C systems, hydraulic and air brake systems, complex electrical and electronic systems, and other components as listed. Welding and fabricating skills and experience are required.
Tech II - Perform preventative maintenance, repairs and diagnostics of electronic components, power train management controls, climate controls and other onboard controls on Mesa County's fleet of vehicles, heavy equipment and specialized machinery. Job requirements include installation of specialized accessory equipment (e.g., two-way radios, cell phones, laptops and modems) and miscellaneous law enforcement equipment. Some welding and fabricating and other general duties are also required.
This position may require the employee to work alone, unsupervised on field repair assignments at times.
Tech I / Tech II - Perform all levels of preventative maintenance on Mesa County's fleet, including heavy equipment, vehicles, light and medium duty trucks, transit buses, and specialized seasonal equipment. Duties include diagnostics and repairs of engines, power train components, hydraulic systems, A/C systems, hydraulic and air brake systems, complex electrical and electronic systems, and other components. Perform welding and fabrication as needed.
Prepare and maintain documentation using diagnostic tools and shop equipment. Read and follow technical instructions and diagnostic flow charts. Skillfully use diagnostic tools, analyzers, digital volt/ohm meters, A/C recovery and charging stations, and other fluid recycling/recovery machines. Operate vehicle and equipment lifts and other shop tools.
Other duties include repair and maintenance of shop equipment, cleaning and detailing of vehicles and equipment, and field work as assigned. Must be able to log labor time and repair notes to electronic work orders using a desktop, laptop or tablet terminal. Perform federal DOT-mandated safety inspections and certify vehicle safety (Tech II). Lead worker responsibilities may be assigned (Tech II).
Oral and written communications must be clear and effective. Perform other related duties as assigned.
QualificationsMinimum Requirements Education and Experience:
High school education or GED with one (1) year vocational/technical school training specific to heavy equipment and automotive repair and maintenance and three (3) years of progressively responsible related work experience. Any combination of education, training and experience that provides the knowledge, skills and abilities required for the job.
Licenses And Certifications Class "R" Colorado Driver's License MAC's or Comparable Air Conditioning (R-134a) Certification A.S.E. Certifications -- (desired) Requirements below to be completed within 6 months of hire date to promote to Fleet Repair & Diagnostic Technician II:
Class "A" or "B" Colorado Commercial Driver's License with Tanker Endorsement Department of Transportation Safety Inspector Certification (or regulatory experience requirements)
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
This position requires standing, stooping, sitting, bending, twisting, and lifting up to 100 pounds. Work is typically indoors but may occasionally be exposed to outside atmospheric conditions for moderate periods. The employee is frequently exposed to dirt, smoke, fumes, extreme heat and cold, traffic noise, and dust for sustained periods. The employee is frequently exposed to possible bodily injury from moving mechanical parts, tools and machinery.
The employee is occasionally exposed to possible bodily injury from electrical shock, falling from high places, and toxic or caustic chemicals. While performing essential functions, exposure to fumes, noxious odors, mists, gases, and poor ventilation may affect the respiratory system, eyes, or skin. Typical noise level is loud due to engines, equipment, machinery and power tools.
