Heavy Equipment Mechanic, Diesel Mechanic, Maintenance Technician / Mechanic
Overview
Perform preventative maintenance, repairs and diagnostics of electronic components, power train management controls, climate controls and other on-board controls on Mesa County's fleet of vehicles, heavy equipment and specialized machinery. Job requirements will include installation of specialized accessory equipment, such as two-way radios, cell phones, lap tops and modems and miscellaneous law enforcement equipment. This position may require that the employee work alone, unsupervised on field repair assignments functions include preventative maintenance and diagnostics on heavy equipment, light automotive vehicles, light and medium duty trucks, transit buses, seasonal equipment and machinery including landfill equipment, and may involve field work with a service truck.
Responsibilities- Perform preventative maintenance and diagnostics on gasoline and diesel engines, power train components, hydraulic systems, A/C systems, hydraulic and air brake systems, complex electrical and electronic systems, and other components as assigned.
- Install specialized accessory equipment (e.g., two-way radios, cell phones, laptops and modems) and other law enforcement equipment; perform welding and fabricating as required.
- Read and follow technical instructions and diagnostic flow charts; skillfully use diagnostic scan tools, analyzers, digital volt/ohm meters, A/C recovery and charge stations, and other fluid recycler/recovery machines.
- Use vehicle and equipment lifts and shop tools (tire changers, welding and cutting tools) for maintenance and repairs; repair and maintain shop equipment and perform cleaning and detailing of vehicles and equipment as assigned.
- Log labor time and repair notes/data using desktop, laptop or tablet-based terminals and electronic work orders.
- Perform federal DOT-mandated safety inspections and certify vehicle safety.
- Occasionally perform field work away from the shop with a field-equipped service truck and without direct supervision; experienced employees may assume lead worker responsibilities in the absence of direct supervision.
- Communicate clearly in oral and written form; perform other related duties as assigned.
Education And Experience
High school education or GED with one (1) year vocational/technical school training specific to heavy equipment and automotive repair and maintenance and three (3) years of progressively responsible related work experience. Any combination of education, training and experience which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities required for the job.
Licenses And Certifications
Class "A" or "B" Colorado Commercial Driver's License - Tanker Endorsement; MAC's or Comparable Air Conditioning (R-134a) Certification (desired);
Department of Transportation Safety Inspector Certification (or regulatory experience requirements); A.S.E. Certifications - (desired).
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT: This position requires standing, stooping, sitting, bending, twisting, and lifting up to 100 pounds. Work is typically indoors but may occasionally be exposed to outside atmospheric conditions for moderate periods and must continue during inclement conditions. The employee is frequently exposed to dirt, smoke, fumes, extreme heat and cold, traffic noise, and dust for sustained periods;
may face possible bodily injury from moving parts, electrical shock, falling, and exposure to chemicals. The work environment is loud, with engines, equipment, machinery and power tools. The employee may be required to work in field conditions and under variable environments.
