Essential Functions
  • Provide daily leadership, direction, and oversight of MSU, ensuring high‑quality patient care and compliance with hospital policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
  • Supervise, coach, and mentor staff, fostering professional growth, accountability, and engagement.
    Develop staffing schedules and determine appropriate staffing patterns to meet patient care needs, workload demands, and budget expectations.
  • Monitor, analyze, and manage workforce productivity, ensuring appropriate resource allocation and alignment with organizational goals.
  • Collaborate with the Assistant Chief Nursing Officer and HR in recruitment, selection, orientation, and retention of staff.
  • Conduct performance evaluations, provide constructive feedback, and implement corrective actions when necessary.
  • Facilitate staff education, training, and competency assessments; support career advancement and certification opportunities.
  • Assist with budget preparation, monitoring, and cost‑containment strategies while ensuring effective resource utilization.
  • Promote a culture of shared governance, evidence‑based practice, patient safety, and continuous quality improvement.
  • Lead unit‑based initiatives to improve clinical outcomes, patient satisfaction, and staff engagement.
  • Serve as a clinical resource, role model, and liaison for staff,, families, and interdisciplinary teams.
  • Support hospital‑wide initiatives, committees, and projects, representing MSU in leadership forums.
  • Ensure accurate and timely documentation, reporting, and communication across the unit and with other departments.
  • Oversee and services provided by outside contractors, ensuring quality and compliance with contractual obligations.
  • Maintain unit readiness for Joint Commission surveys, CMS reviews, and other regulatory audits; ensure staff adherence to accreditation, documentation, and safety standards.
  • Actively support and participate in our designation as a Pathway to Excellence® organization, fostering a healthy work environment, nurse empowerment, and shared decision‑making.
  • Participate in the hospital’s inpatient nursing leadership on‑call rotation, providing support and guidance to staff across nursing units outside of regular business hours.
  • Occasionally step into direct staffing roles within MSU to support the team and ensure safe, continuous patient care during times of high census or staffing shortages or periodically as needed to maintain the direct care skillset. Tracking, identifying trends, and improving nurse‑sensitive adverse events.
  • Collaborate with other nurse leaders to support optimal staffing, directing Float Pool resources as appropriate.
  • Tracking and collaborating with the Education Department on competency management for MSU staff.
Supervisory Responsibilities
  • This position directly supervises the work of others.
  • This position plans, monitors, and appraises job results; conducts training; implements and enforces systems, policies, and procedures; maintains a safe and healthy work environment by establishing and enforcing organization standards and adhering to legal regulations; completes operations by developing schedules, assigning and monitoring work, gathering resources, implementing productivity standards, resolving operations problems, maintaining reference manuals, and implementing new procedures.
Qualifications – License,

Education and/or Experience Required
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (BSN) required.
  • Master’s Degree in Nursing (MSN) preferred.
  • CCRN, PCCN, or similar high acuity certification preferred.
  • Current, unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of Colorado.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of leadership experience in an ICU or critical care department or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Current BLS certification (required prior to employment).
  • ACLS certification (required prior to employment).
  • PALS certification (required within 6 months of hire).
  • TNCC or TCAR (required within 6 months of hire).
