Position: VOLUNTEER SERVICES COORDINATOR - ANIMAL SERVICES TEMPORARY

Overview

Mesa County Animal Services seeks a volunteer coordinator to oversee the planning, direction, supervision, and coordination of volunteer and foster services, community events, educational initiatives, and outreach programs. The role requires excellent communication and interpersonal skills, strong organizational and leadership capabilities, proficiency in database management and MS Office applications, and the ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and experiences.

A genuine interest in volunteering and social causes is important, as is the ability to motivate and inspire others to participate and engage.

Volunteer and Fostering Program Development:
Design and implement strategies to attract and retain volunteers and foster caregivers through multiple channels, including digital platforms, community events, and outreach efforts. Manage application processing, conduct orientation sessions, and maintain comprehensive records regarding skills, availability, and interests. Recognize volunteer contributions to promote ongoing engagement.

  • Training and Educational Support:
    Develop and facilitate training programs that prepare volunteers and fosters with essential skills, including animal handling, shelter protocols, and event support. Identify ongoing training opportunities and encourage professional development.
  • Scheduling and Program Management:
    Create and manage volunteer schedules to ensure all shelter functions, events, and administrative tasks are adequately staffed. Utilize volunteer management systems to track hours, assignments, and availability. Address inquiries and resolve conflicts in a professional and timely manner.
  • Foster Program Coordination:
    Evaluate incoming animals' needs for foster care, match them with appropriate foster homes, and coordinate transportation of animals and supplies such as food, medication, and crates.
  • Foster Caregiver Support:
    Serve as the primary liaison for foster caregivers, providing ongoing support, resources, and guidance. Respond promptly to questions and emergencies, including after-hours as needed. Collaborate with medical and behavioral teams to ensure the well-being of foster animals and assist foster caregivers with troubleshooting.
  • Outreach and Program Support:
    Work with shelter staff to determine volunteer needs across various departments. Organize volunteer teams for special events, fundraising efforts, and community engagement initiatives. Participate in educational programs and outreach activities aimed at promoting animal welfare in the community.
  • Administrative Compliance and Recordkeeping:
    Ensure all volunteer and foster activities adhere to organizational policies and safety standards. Maintain accurate records, prepare reports on program performance, and manage supplies related to volunteer and foster programs.
Minimum Qualifications Required

Education and Experience:

Bachelor's Degree in psychology, social work, sociology or related field and three (3) years of related experience

Any combination of education, training and experience which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities required for the job.

Physical Requirements And Working Environment

This position requires standing, stooping, sitting, bending, twisting, and lifting up to 25 pounds.

Work is generally confined to a standard office environment.
