$10,983.23 - $14,210.65 The County Attorney III – Human Services reports directly to the County Attorney and serves as the central liaison with the Department of Human Services. Advises Mesa County and its departments in legal issues of Dependency and Neglect cases, mental health, adult protection, and other matters as assigned, with an emphasis on client service. The role includes ensuring compliance with the County Attorney’s annual contract with the Department of Human Services.
The position may train and mentor Assistant County Attorneys and Senior Assistant County Attorneys in the Human Services Division and may advise the County Attorney on oversight of outside counsel for Human Services matters and other duties as reasonably requested.
- Monitor the County Attorney Office’s compliance with the annual contract with the Department of Human Services.
- Under supervision, train and mentor the Human Services Division staff attorneys and manage a caseload in dependency and neglect matters.
- Advise the Department of Human Services and other county departments on Human Services-related matters.
- Provide legal representation for Mesa County in Dependency and Neglect matters, mental health, adult protection, and other assigned legal issues.
- Prepare written opinions as required or assigned by the County Attorney.
- Investigate claims or complaints related to the Department of Human Services as they relate to D&N and other matters handled by Human Services staff attorneys.
- Advise the County Attorney on staffing, quality of work, and general operations.
- Serve on boards and participate in task forces as approved by the County Attorney.
- Maintain professional competence through ongoing continuing education opportunities.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Education and Experience:
Juris Doctorate or LLM; and
Six years legal experience; or
Any combination of education, training and experience meeting the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
Licenses and
Certifications:
Current license to practice law in the State of Colorado.
Valid Colorado Driver’s License
Knowledge:
Local Government legislative and quasi-judicial processes;
Colorado Rules of Evidence;
Colorado Rules of Civil Procedure; state and federal laws relating to human services including Dependency and Neglect, adult protection and mental health; research and reporting methods.
Skills:
Customer service and training for attorneys to ensure high-quality service; tact and discretion; research, data compilation and presentation; organization, prioritization and deadline management; problem solving and policy interpretation; report writing; staff development; budgeting and strategic planning; supporting policy initiatives.
Mental and Physical Abilities:
Clear oral and written communication; independent fact gathering and analysis; public speaking; reading and interpreting professional and legal materials; ability to define problems and draw valid conclusions; capability to operate in office or courtroom settings.
Typically moderately quiet office or courtroom setting.
