The Sterile Processing Technologist is responsible for the decontamination, inspection, assembly, sterilization, and distribution of surgical instruments and medical equipment. This role plays a vital part in ensuring the safety and efficiency of surgical and clinical operations by maintaining high standards of cleanliness, organization, and infection control.
Key Responsibilities- Decontaminate, clean, and sterilize surgical instruments, trays, and equipment following established protocols.
- Inspect instruments for cleanliness, functionality, and wear; repair or report damaged items as necessary.
- Assemble instrument trays and prepare surgical sets according to procedural specifications.
- Operate sterilizers, washers, and other related equipment safely and effectively.
- Monitor sterilization indicators and document all sterilization and quality control data accurately.
- Maintain adequate inventory levels of sterile supplies and ensure proper storage and labeling.
- Follow infection prevention guidelines and maintain compliance with hospital and regulatory standards (e.g., AAMI, AORN, and Joint Commission).
- Collaborate with surgical and nursing teams to meet patient care and procedure requirements.
- Participate in continuing education and professional development to stay current on best practices.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Completion of a Sterile Processing or Central Service Technician training program.
- Strong knowledge of sterilization techniques, infection control standards, and medical terminology.
- Excellent organizational and attention-to-detail skills.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced healthcare environment and manage multiple priorities.
- Previous experience as a Sterile Processing Technician or in a hospital sterile processing department.
- Experience with computerized instrument tracking systems.
- Certification as a Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) or Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician (CSPDT) preferred or required depending on facility policy.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification may be required.
