Summary

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP). Applicants must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit their EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after complete review of the application.

Qualifications

This is an open continuous announcement and will remain open until 06/08/2026. The initial cutoff date for referral of eligible applications will be 01/20/2026. Eligible applications received after that date will be referred at regular intervals until positions are filled.

Basic Requirements
  • Citizenship – Must be a citizen of the United States. Non-citizens may be appointed only when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA policy.
  • English language proficiency – Candidates must be proficient in spoken and written English to be appointed as authorized by 38 U.S.C. § 7403(f).
  • Education – Must hold a master’s degree in social work from a school accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Graduates of schools in candidacy status do not meet this requirement until the school is fully accredited, and a doctoral degree may not substitute for the master’s degree. Verification of the degree can be obtained from CSWE accreditation website.
  • Licensure – Persons hired or reassigned to social worker positions in the GS-0185 series must be licensed or certified by a state to practice social work at the master’s degree level. Current state requirements can be viewed at VHA State Licensure information.
  • Experience – One year of experience equivalent to the GS‑11 grade level, demonstrating possession of advanced practice skills, judgment, and progressively greater professional competency. Optional certification or post‑master’s training from a nationally recognized professional organization or university is acceptable.
  • Licensure/Certification – Assigned social worker program coordinators must be licensed or certified at the advanced practice level and able to provide supervision for licensure.
  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities – Demonstrated knowledge of program coordination, consultation, negotiation, and monitoring; ability to write policies, procedures, and/or practice guidelines; ability to supervise multidisciplinary staff; skill in organizing work, setting priorities, meeting multiple deadlines, and evaluating assigned program areas; ability to provide training, orientation, and guidance within clinical practice.
  • Program Coordination – Administratively responsible for a clinical program providing treatment to Veterans in a major specialty area (e.g., spinal cord injury, hospice and palliative care, suicide prevention). Oversight of daily operation, policy development, budgeting, compliance, data analysis, and program evaluation.
Duties
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with Veterans, staff, and stakeholders.
  • Advocate on behalf of Veterans to secure timely services and benefits.
  • Collaborate with Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Service Chief for continuity of care.
  • Utilize community resources, make referrals, and coordinate services.
  • Assist Veterans in overcoming care barriers, obtain authorizations, and access benefits.
  • Conduct psychosocial assessments and develop treatment plans with the interdisciplinary team.
  • Lead coordination of care across settings, ensuring delivery of clinically indicated care plans.
  • Provide consultation, education, and advocacy as a subject matter expert in polytrauma and spinal cord injury social work.
  • Coordinate community-based services and information referral for additional VA and community agencies.
  • Offer specialized interventions, including individual, group, and family counseling and psychotherapy.
