About the Work UnitThe purpose of the work unit is to plan, design and administer transportation projects assigned. This includes a wide range of activities that spans from planning through project development, advertisement, and construction to completion. These activities support all of the “investment categories” for the Mission of the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT).
About the PositionThe Engineer-in-Training position is expected to gain engineering expertise and to apply engineering theories, principles, and standards to the design and preparation of plans and specifications for highway projects. This position will also ensure quality construction by supervising, inspecting, testing, and documenting the work on highway construction projects and verify they are in compliance with the contract plans and specifications. As the selected candidate gains knowledge and experience, there is opportunity for advancement.
Dutiesand responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Learn to support the PE with assigned low level complexity projects using practical applications of professional engineering processes, theories, laws, principles, and techniques related to highway engineering.
- Learn to assist the PE with documentation for design-related decisions; participates in project scoping and consults with the PE to recommend the final design for approval.
- Learn to maintain official project records by receiving, reviewing, and assuring the proper logging, distribution, and filing of all related documents.
- Learn to assemble plans and specifications using established CDOT formats and worksheets.
- Learn to use Open Roads Designer software to design roadway improvements and create roadway design drawings.
- Review and learn to interpret and incorporate design standards from guidance documents such as the Standard Specifications for Road and Bridge Construction and its revisions, the CDOT Project Development Manual, the AASHTO Policy on Geometric Design of Highways and Streets, etc.
- With oversight, learn to assemble plans and specifications using established CDOT formats and worksheets.
- Under the guidance and supervision of a PE review, and learn to interpret and incorporate design standards from guidance documents such as the Standard Specifications for Road and Bridge Construction and its revisions, the CDOT Project Development Manual, the AASHTO Policy on Geometric Design of Highways and Streets, etc.
- Learn to create and maintain project design schedules that accurately reflect the design timeline, including input from the specialty groups such as Environmental, Hydraulics, ROW, Utilities, Bridge, Geotech, etc.
- Learn to schedule and run project design progress meetings such as FIR, FOR etc.
- Drive to project meetings and to project sites for field visits.
- With oversight learn to generate and maintain an accurate detailed estimate for the construction costs of assigned projects. This includes such tasks as setting up and managing project information, quantities and pay items into AASHTOWare during design.
- Learn to serve as a liaison to other CDOT units regarding project activities and issues.
- With guidance learn to create and maintain project design schedules that accurately reflect the design timeline, including input from the specialty groups such as Environmental, Hydraulics, ROW, Utilities, Bridge, Geotech, etc.
- Learn to communicate with other state employees and construction personnel.
- Required to drive CDOT vehicles to various projects.
