Job Title: Long Term Substitute Upper School History Teacher
Location: Ascent Classical Academy of Grand Junction (ACAGJ)
FLSA Status: Exempt
Reports to: Dean of Upper School
Work Hours/Days: Monday through Friday 7:00am-3:30pm + one meeting after school, full school day, professional development and work days.
Position to be filled immediately and ready to start after Spring Break on March 25th, 2026

This History position is Full Time 5 classes. The classes are 7-10th grade history. 3 sections of middle school American, Ancient and Modern European History.
Essential Functions- Prepare unit and lesson plans for all courses in alignment with Hillsdale College's K12 Program Guide for each school year
- Teach and mentor students, utilizing classical pedagogy methods
- Assign, collect, grade and return graded work in a timely manner
- Proctor or supervise tests on the annual testing cycle (beginning of year, middle of year, end of year)
- Continuously monitor student progress and self-evaluate how best to support effective student learning
- Proactively identify struggling or advanced students to provide additional support or academic extensions
- Collaborate with Students Services team to meet requirements of special educational plans, such as IEPs, 504s, and others
- Communicate regularly, usually weekly, with parents
- Assist in daily operations of the school (e.g., taking attendance, supervising student arrivals, passing periods in hallways, lunchtime and recess supervision, subbing for other teachers during non-class times) on a shared schedule
- Participate in professional development as offered by ACACS and Hillsdale College's K12 Office
- Maintain confidentiality in student records
- Maintain a collegial, professional relationship with students, parents, and colleagues as a partner in the community of learners
- Complete all required training
- Demonstrate consistent and reliable attendance by adhering to assigned work hours, reporting on time, and following proper procedures for absences or tardiness to ensure minimal disruption to students, colleagues, and school operations
- Demonstrate proficiency in both written and spoken English to effectively perform their job responsibilities and communicate in the workplace
- Perform other duties as assigned
- Bachelor's degree and passing score on the State Praxis in the subject area required
- Teachers with a bachelor's degree in the subject taught are preferred, or at a minimum 36 hours of higher education credit in the subject area of instruction. (In some cases, a passing grade in a content exam will suffice.)
- Ability to teach upper-level courses
- All faculty will be required to participate in a study of Tried and True by Daniel Copeland and The Abolition of Man by C.S. Lewis
- Strong background in relevant content areas with a willingness to receive specific training

- Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds
- Must be able to traverse the classroom and the school
- Must be able to supervise outdoor duties
- Convictions for violent crimes, such as assault or domestic violence.
- Convictions for offenses against children, including abuse or endangerment.
- Drug-related offenses, particularly those involving the distribution or trafficking of controlled substances.
- Certain felony convictions, depending on their nature and recency.
