The Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT) is seeking a dedicated and hardworking team player to join us in our mission to enhance the quality of life for Nebraskans by building and maintaining a statewide transportation system that is convenient, safe, and innovative.
Pay rate: $22.756 per hour with added pay differentials for CDL functions performed regularly:
- $1/hour after 1 year of continuous service
- $1/hour after 3 years of continuous service
- $1/hour after 5 years of continuous service
- Perform highly skilled and complex diagnosis, maintenance, and repair of multiple makes and models of heavy-duty trucks, road construction and maintenance equipment with computerized systems, as well as medium and lightweight vehicles and other motorized equipment.
- Fabricate and repair equipment and parts using welders and welding materials to adapt parts, replace unavailable parts, attach components, and repair damage.
- Calibrate various systems on heavy-duty vehicles to ensure safe and efficient operation in relation to road and weather conditions.
- Inspect new equipment to ensure it meets specifications and set up so it is road ready.
- Evaluate equipment to identify adjustments needed for auxiliary attachments and operating systems.
- Install, troubleshoot, repair, and replace mechanical, electrical, computer, and hydraulic system components to restore equipment.
- Maintain hydraulic systems; install and monitor electrical systems; repair steering, suspension, brake, drive train, and fuel systems; repair/overhaul engines or replace diesel and/or gasoline engines.
- Perform major engine overhauls using precision tools.
- Obtain bids for parts, consult District Mechanic on repair techniques.
- Overhaul transmissions and final drives; diagnose hydraulic systems and rewire electrical systems.
- Perform metal fabrication and major repairs on snow plows and trucks requiring extensive welding.
- Disassemble units, inspect parts for wear, repair, overhaul, and replace parts using precision instruments.
- Operate computer for equipment management; may perform repairs in the field and respond to emergencies outside regular hours.
- Operate a wrecker for vehicle recovery and operate tandem axle trucks or other heavy equipment as needed.
- Perform varied snow removal tasks; conduct preventative maintenance; assist in general upkeep of assigned equipment.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Practical work experience performing automotive/diesel maintenance and repair, including use of computerized diagnostic instruments and equipment OR post-high school vocational/technical coursework in automotive/diesel mechanics with instruction in computerized diagnostic equipment and repair practices.
Preferred QualificationsA degree in Automotive Diesel Mechanics with experience in repair of trucks or heavy equipment; experience in welding and fabrication; basic computer experience; knowledge of maintenance, repair, and service procedures for gasoline and diesel equipment; ability to diagnose and troubleshoot problems in gasoline and diesel-powered equipment and anticipate malfunctions from verbal descriptions.
OtherPossess or be able to obtain a Class A CDL within 60 days of hire through in-house CDL training; costs covered by the department. Must be able to report to work outside scheduled hours for snow and emergencies; must be able to report within 45 minutes of contact. Must have a good driving record and be able to lift up to 100 pounds, work in extreme temperatures, and climb, bend, stoop, and lift above shoulders.
Must be 18 years of age or older.
