American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Progressive Care Unit (PCU/Stepdown) position requiring at least 2 years of experience, active NE or compact RN license, and the ability to titrate drips in an acute care setting.
Details- Acute care stepdown/PCU unit in a hospital setting with 33 beds
- Patient population ranges from young adults to geriatrics with diagnoses including sepsis, STEMI, CHF, chest pain, COVID, stroke, renal failure, COPD, DKA, and complex multisystem conditions
- Nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:4-5; CNAs available at approximately 1:10, though availability fluctuates with census
- RNs are required to titrate drips including Heparin, Amiodarone, Cardizem, Nitroglycerin, Insulin, and IV antibiotics, as well as administer maintenance IV medications
- RT equipment on unit includes BiPAP and Airvo
- Telemetry monitor techs are present, but RNs are required to independently read and interpret their own telemetry strips
- Charting is done via Epic
- 12-hour night shifts (1830–0700); schedule is set by unit schedulers
- Every other weekend required
- Holiday coverage required as needed to meet unit needs
- Floating may be required to Med Surg, Inpatient Rehab, or Skilled Care
- Active NE or Compact (NLC) RN license required; must be active at time of consideration — pending licenses are not accepted
- Current certifications required: BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS — pending certifications are not accepted
- Minimum 2 years of RN experience required
- PCU/Stepdown or comparable acute care experience required
- Epic EMR experience required
- Driver's license required for consideration and will be used to verify permanent address
- Two professional references required: one supervisor from within the last 12 months and one peer or supervisor from within the last 3 years, both including dates of employment and eligibility for rehire
- Candidates must reside more than 50 miles from the facility, as confirmed by driver's license
- Candidates may not be currently employed (full-time, part-time, or PRN) by any Common Spirit-affiliated facility, including CHI or Dignity
- Responsibilities include managing high-acuity stepdown patients, titrating drips, reading telemetry strips, completing bedside shift report, and performing hourly rounding
- Unit has a fast-paced patient flow with frequent admissions and discharges within the same shift — a strong sense of teamwork, a positive attitude, and commitment to patient experience are key to success on this unit
- A charge nurse is present on each shift and carries an assignment
- Orientation consists of one week of classroom instruction followed by two 12-hour shifts of on-the-floor orientation
- An open-book, pass/fail skills exam is administered on the Friday of orientation week — a score of 90% or higher is required to pass; failure to pass may result to contract termination
- Artificial nails are prohibited in all patient care areas; refusal to remove them may result in contract termination
- Navy blue scrubs are required for RNs
- RTO requests must be submitted upfront; 7 or fewer days per 13-week contract will be considered — additional RTO will not be approved after the start of the contract
- Candidates who were previously employed PRN through outside staffing firms at Common Spirit facilities may still be considered
