Duties & Responsibilities
- Support delivery of educational laboratory activities for MLS and HT programs
- Collect and prepare laboratory specimens from artificial sources for student use
- Coordinate collection and delivery of human specimens from health care institutions, utilizing appropriate biohazard precautions/protocol during shipping and transport
- Maintain viability and purity of microorganism stock cultures
- Accurately prepare reagents, media, stains, controls, calibrators, and other supplies required to facilitate laboratory activities
- Prepare and put away laboratory equipment and supplies utilized in off-campus educational activities
- Prepare HT slides for evaluation and/or digitization
- Communicate with faculty to determine needs of educational lab sessions/activities
- Demonstrate respect for and commitment to curricular decisions and related laboratory needs
- Prepare, set-up, and take-down on-campus educational lab sessions/activities
- Be present and participate in on-campus educational lab sessions/activities
- Assist faculty in navigation of the biohazard lab space, supplies, and equipment
- Prepare and present laboratory demonstrations
- Communicate with students in a way that supports curricular design regarding laboratory performance and laboratory theory or skill-related questions
- Maintain documentation related to educational laboratory activities including but not limited to Standard Operating Procedures and directions/notes for individual lab sessions
- Grade student work and electronically enter grades for laboratory, distance, and/or on-campus courses
- Recognize emergent situations that arise during laboratory activities, and initiate appropriate action(s) in response
- Manage laboratory operations for the School of Medicine & Health Sciences biohazard lab
- Coordinate use of the biohazard laboratory with other Departments on campus
- Maintain organization and cleanliness of the laboratories and equipment areas
- Oversee upkeep, training/procedures, and troubleshooting for laboratory IT equipment
- Assist the departmental Safety Officer in laboratory safety compliance activities
- Maintain laboratory safety documentation (ex. MSDS sheets, biological lab manual)
- Maintain updated chemical inventory
- Maintain an up-to-date equipment inventory list in conjunction with the department administrative officer
- Coordinate labeling of equipment according to UND policies
- Create and maintain an inventory control system to ensure adequate supplies for carrying out laboratory education activities
- Establish communication with University buying partnerships
- Order, receive, and check-in equipment, reagents, and supplies
- Manage all laboratory equipment performance and maintenance
- Coordinate and prepare laboratory staff for educational activities
- Coordinate orientation and training of Teaching Assistants (TA) and other laboratory staff
- Maintain the TA Handbook and other staff training documents
- Coordinate scheduling of laboratory staff to ensure appropriate student/teacher ratios during educational activities
- Identify and triage duties amongst participating staff to facilitate timely and supportive laboratory instruction
- Mentor and provide feedback to laboratory staff to help them effectively and positively support students, faculty, and the program
- Manage digital slide and/or imaging technology for the Department of MLS
- Create and maintain the digital specimen/image library
- Identify imaging needs of faculty and explore options for securing the samples for digitization
- Perform digitization of microscope slides using the available slide scanning system
- Train department of MLS faculty and/or staff in digitization and imaging processes
- Perform maintenance for digital slide and imaging technology
- Participate in other programmatic activities and initiatives
