General Summary
  • Use independent professional judgment and nursing process to provide full range of delegated, interdependent, and independent nursing services to patients.
  • Demonstrate clinical competence, compassion, customer service orientation, focus on process and outcomes, and cost‑consciousness while planning, implementing, and evaluating nursing care.
  • Coordinate multidisciplinary care plans in accordance with Nursing Problem Care Sets, clinical practice guidelines, and regulatory requirements to ensure appropriate length of stay and quality outcomes.
  • Provide patient care that respects rights, dignity, values, culture, and preferences; assess family needs for information and education; plan and implement teaching; and evaluate effectiveness.
  • Collaborate with patients, families, staff, and community agencies to develop discharge plans that prepare patients for continued care.
  • Utilize the 4 Ps (patient, pertinent issues, picture, plan) to convey information at change of shift.
  • Initiate risks assessment (fall, skin breakdown, VTE, aspiration); complete medication reconciliation; and implement appropriate protocols such as SKINN Bundles and Fall Prevention Plans.
  • Document nursing interventions (NIC), outcomes (NOC), education, and evaluations each shift; monitor patient responses to interventions.
  • Administer therapeutic regimens: medications, IVs, blood products, basic procedures (dressing change, catheterization, NG tube insertion, suctioning).
  • Prepare patients for surgery or other invasive procedures; assist with procedures in accordance with standards of care.
  • Maintain peripheral IV therapy; operate and troubleshoot IV pumps, PCA pumps, epidural pumps, feeding pumps, and patient beds.
  • Monitor vital signs, lab work, I&O, blood glucose; recognize and report changes; intervene appropriately.
  • Manage pain: assess pain levels, inform patients, administer analgesics or alternatives, and incorporate pain management resources into discharge plans.
  • Recognize acute changes in respiratory, neurologic, cardiac, and urinary status; respond with direct intervention and notify physician or SWAT as appropriate.
  • Respond to emergencies by initiating CPR, assembling emergency equipment, and performing immediate interventions when permissible.
  • Provide support to families in crisis; promote a safe environment; use restraints appropriately and according to policy.
  • Communicate with interdisciplinary teams to ensure smooth patient progress through the system.
  • Identify ethical issues, including advanced directives, and initiate resolution steps.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and professional confidentiality standards.
  • Resolve customer concerns promptly; report unresolved complaints to leadership.
  • Promote safe use and documentation of restraints; utilize universal precautions for all patients.
  • Apply cost‑effective use of supplies and resources; assist in evaluating new products and nursing practices.
  • Support nursing department and unit goals; engage in quality monitoring, improvement activities, and staff counseling.
  • Participate in teaching/mentoring of student nurses and new hires.
  • Evaluate own performance using feedback; develop continuous improvement plan.
  • Complete annual safety and unit‑specific education requirements (GLI).
  • Provide leadership and guidance to other staff, communicate expectations, observe work, and assist with patient care activities.
  • Work in a normal patient care environment with moderate exposure to noise, dust, and temperature; frequent exposure to communicable diseases and hazardous substances.
  • Require 3–9 months of on‑the‑job experience for orientation to unit and departmental policies.
Education/Experience Requirements
  • Licensed Registered Nurse credentialed from the Michigan Board of Nursing within 60 days of hire or transfer date.
  • Certified BLS Provider (Basic Life Support) from the American Heart Association within 90 days of hire or transfer date (or certified instructor).
  • Graduate of an approved professional RN nursing program.
