PRIMARY PURPOSE

The Bilingual Instructional Interpreter/Communication Support provides language interpretation and translation services for instructional purposes within the Teaching and Learning Department. This position supports communication for educational programs, meetings and instructional processes. The Interpreter’s primary function is to facilitate accurate and effective communication (oral and written) for instructional initiatives and assist with related tasks that enhance teaching and learning for bilingual students and families.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Certification:

  • Required: High School Diploma or GED
  • Speak and Write English and Spanish Fluently
  • Preferred: Coursework in English as a Second Language (ESL)

Special Knowledge/

Skills:

  • Ability to organize and manage materials and equipment
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students and adults, in English and Spanish
  • Ability to precisely interpret from one language to another and reversed as well
  • Ability to work cooperatively with students, their parents and other adults
  • Ability to interact positively with students, their parents and other adults
  • Assists in development and implementation of quality programs
  • Knowledge of language development and instructional methodology
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
  • Interprets expressively and receptively for the students, parents, and district personnel.
  • Assist in administering standardized tests and/or diagnostic instruments to individual students and small groups.
  • Assist in preparation of LPAC meetings & when necessary to serve as Interpreter.
  • Assist in maintaining LPAC and ELL student records under the direction of the Bilingual Instructional Coordinator and Bilingual Compliance Coordinator.
  • Assist with phone conferences between parents and support staff.
  • Translate various documents into written Spanish for instructional purposes.
  • Assist in administering LAS Links (Language Assessment Scales) & Iowa Basic Skills test.
  • Provide translation support for the common assessment and benchmark process.
  • Assist with McKinney-Vento support for our Spanish speaking families (including enrollment interview and resource support).
  • Assist with translation of other programs under Teaching & Learning (GT, MTSS, etc.).
  • Assist in keeping Teaching & Learning Dept. copiers and poster makers functioning.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned by the Director of Teaching & Learning Dept. and Bilingual Coordinators.
