The Nursing Assistant (NA) serves as a caregiver to the resident during the scheduled work period in long‑term care. The NA provides resident‑centered nursing care and daily living assistance under the supervision of a registered nurse (RN). The role includes age‑appropriate care related to the physical and psychological needs of the resident as per the care plan, and adherence to infection prevention and control policies and personal protective equipment use.
Key responsibilities include:
- Assisting with basic health care needs such as bathing, toileting, grooming, dressing/undressing, and recording vital signs, as well as providing psychosocial support and other personal care.
- Supporting residents in transferring, repositioning, and walking using correct transfer techniques and equipment, and providing range‑of‑motion and passive exercises.
- Preparing and serving food, creating a positive dining experience, and assisting with meals and snacks.
- Assisting nursing staff with procedures, documenting resident interactions and outcomes, and communicating changes in condition to the charge nurse.
- Collecting non‑invasive body fluid specimens and gathering vital signs.
- Providing housekeeping and laundry services to keep resident areas clean.
- Supporting recreational and wellness programs and encouraging resident participation.
- Participating in departmental/organizational committees and task forces as needed.
- High school graduate or GED preferred, but not required.
- Minimum age of 16.
- Prior clinical or nursing assistant experience in long‑term care preferred.
- Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification within four months of the start date, or enrollment in a training program.
- A minimum of 12 hours of continuing education annually, with satisfactory completion of department‑specific competency testing.
- In applicable states, certification and registration with the Unlicensed Assistive Person (UAP) Registry.
- May be required to qualify as a Sanford Category II Driver, including a valid driver’s license and medical clearance per the Sanford Driving Policy.
