Band 3 Maternity Support Worker

The primary role of the Maternity Support Worker (MSW) is to assist, support and work in collaboration with the midwife and the wider multidisciplinary team; in order to provide a safe and holistic approach to women centred care.
The midwife is ultimately responsible for the care of the mother and her new-born(s), and it is under the direct or indirect supervision of the midwife that the MSW assists with and provides clinical care following completion of any relevant or appropriate training. The post is rotational and the employee will be provided with appropriate training for the clinical setting in which they are working.
These settings include antenatal inpatient or outpatient care, intrapartum inpatient care and postnatal inpatient and outpatient care.

We are currently looking to recruit a Maternity Support Worker at Band
3. This is an exciting opportunity to stretch you; undertaking phlebotomy, cannulation, vital signs to mention but a few.

Job responsibilities- Demonstrate understanding of the importance of working in partnership with women and their families.
- Develops and maintains positive relationships, supports informed decision makers and respects the womans and her families wishes, with particular attention to when the family unit is separated, or mom/baby is critically ill.
- Understand the MSWs scope of practice and the importance of the role within national framework to enable working within limits of own competence and authority, escalating to the MDT to inform care planning in line with national and local guidance to avoid harm.
- Clinical skills including vital signs, venepuncture and cannulation, ECG, etc.
- 4 GCSEs (grades A-C) including English Language and Maths or equivalent (if not evidenced on application, you will not be scored)
- Must have experience working in an NHS Environment
- Previous experience within a maternity setting
- Excellent baby handling skills
- Good organisational skills
- Ability to work using own initiative
- Ability to adapt to different situations
- Ability to deal with potentially emotional situations such as babies going into care or adoption
- Ability to use persuasion, reassurance, tact, empathy and sensitivity in order to minimise parental anxiety
