Job Description Summary
Performs semi-skilled work in the operation and maintenance of utility water and reclaimed water transmission and distribution systems, wastewater collection, and water/wastewater treatment plant equipment and facilities. Maintains, monitors, installs, and/or repairs the City’s water distribution system, service lines, valves, fire hydrants, wastewater collection, and treatment facilities.

- Demonstrates a continuous effort to improve operations by streamlining work processes, decreasing turnaround times, and working cooperatively and jointly to provide efficiency and excellence in the use of City resources.
- Participates in in-house and/or on-the-job training activities, completes all training assignments.
- Delivers outstanding customer service, establishing and maintaining open communication with all internal and external customers, including co-workers, contractors, residents, and other City departments.
- Adheres to industry and City safety standards, policies, practices, and procedures, and provides services in accordance with government standards such as Bluestake, OSHA, and MAG.
- Executes routine and emergency operational, maintenance, construction, and repair functions of infrastructure or equipment utilized in the wastewater collection division under the direction of the Senior UT.
- Operates all equipment used in wastewater collection, including pumps, motors, sewer cleaning equipment, tank trucks, CDL-required large vacuum trucks, and various tools; maintains the integrity of landscaping, checks storage tanks and electrical panels, adjusts chemical feed rates, and completes work orders.
- Conducts daily inspections of collection facilities, logs daily records, interprets readings from meters, gauges, charts and instruments, and detects mechanical or process deficiencies, communicating findings to the Senior UT and/or supervisor.
- Formal Education / Knowledge:
Four years of high school or equivalent. - Experience:
Minimum one year in a related field. - Certifications:
Valid driver’s license, ADEQ Grade I Operator License in Collections, and must obtain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within 12 months of hire. - Reading:
Ability to read maps, manuals, work orders, and blueprints. - Math:
Ability to perform general math calculations. - Writing:
Ability to write work orders, memos, letters, and reports. - Managerial:
No supervision responsibilities; may provide advice to less experienced employees. - Policy / Decision Making:
Moderate; typically follows detailed instructions with limited deviation. - Technical
Skills:
Limited application of standard technical skills; limited analysis and independent thinking. - Interpersonal / Human Relations:
Moderate; regular interaction primarily for information sharing.
- Review collection system standard operating procedures, job hazard analysis, and confined space assessments.
- Become familiar with the City’s collection system.
- Identify and locate all City lift stations, completing daily operation and maintenance inspections.
- Demonstrate laptop use for maps and data entry.
- Complete the confined space entry CBT and attend hands-on training.
- Begin working toward obtaining CDL Class A with tanker endorsement.
- Read and understand maps and plans related to the wastewater collection system.
- Become familiar with using Lucity for daily work orders.
- Complete the LOTO CBT and attend hands-on training.
- Complete the Hazard Communication CBT and demonstrate use of the MSDS management system.
- Inspect the structural condition of sewer manholes in the collection system.
- Safely operate and maintain sewer‑cleaning equipment such as the combination cleaning truck and easement jetter.
- Obtain ADEQ Grade I Wastewater Collection System Operator Certification.
