Overview

This position performs a variety of skilled work to maintain chemical feeder equipment, biological processes, motors, telemetering sensory equipment, and pumping equipment for wastewater treatment plant equipment and operations. Performs difficult technical and mechanical work in the operation and maintenance of wastewater treatment and conveyance facilities. May provide direction to peers and subordinates in performing routine day-to-day work activities. This position may be eligible for a sign on bonus.

Qualifications
  • Formal Education/Knowledge:
    Work requires knowledge necessary to understand basic operational, technical, or office processes. Level of knowledge equivalent to four years of high school or equivalency.
  • Experience:

    Minimum two years of experience in a related field.
  • Certifications and Other Requirements:
    Valid Driver’s License and ADEQ Grade I Wastewater Treatment Operator Certification and obtain an ADEQ Grade II Wastewater Treatment Operator Certification and Commercial Driver’s License within 12 months of hire.
  • Reading:
    Ability to read papers, periodicals, journals, manuals, dictionaries, thesauruses, and encyclopedias. Education may be obtained in high school up to college or from experience and self-study.
  • Math:
    Ability to apply fractions, percentages, ratios/proportions, and measurement.
  • Writing:
    Ability to write reports, business letters, expositions, and summaries with proper format, punctuation, spelling, and grammar.
  • Managerial:
    Semi-Complex - Occasional direction of helpers, assistants, seasonal employees, interns, or temporary employees.
  • Policy/Decision Making:
    Moderate - Follows established SOPs and policies; may choose appropriate procedure.

    Skills:

Responsibilities
  • Demonstrates a continuous effort to improve operations by streamlining work processes, decreasing turnaround times, and enhancing efficiency in the use of City resources. Applies chemistry, biology, extended math, and other sciences daily.
  • Delivers outstanding customer service. Maintains open communication with internal and external customers, informs supervisor of daily operations, lab results, and important developments.
  • Adheres to industry and City safety standards, policies, practices, and procedures. Prepares and submits required safety records and reports.
  • Executes routine and emergency operational, maintenance, and repair functions on equipment in the wastewater reclamation division. Provides input to supervisors regarding performance reviews for Wastewater I Operators.
  • Conducts daily inspections of wastewater treatment facilities and related equipment; records readings; adjusts to regulate system flow and process stability; maintains records and reports. Processes bio solids with complex equipment and assists with bio solids digestion facilities.
  • Conducts and interprets wastewater process control laboratory analyses and permit-required lab testing. Makes process control adjustments to ensure facility compliance and system stability.
  • Assumes duties of the Senior Wastewater Operator as assigned during their absence.
First Year / Objectives

First 3 Months of Employment:

  • Within 90 days, demonstrate ability to perform all daily inspection rounds and data recording at the Goodyear WRF sites and Rainbow Valley WRF.

First 6 Months of Employment:

  • Operate solids handling equipment safely and proficiently, maintaining proper solids concentrations in digesters.
  • Adhere to work schedules and complete timely Leave of Absence forms.
  • Complete data collection forms and daily log book entries.
  • Demonstrate understanding of SCADA systems and equipment alarms & alerts.
  • Understand the treatment process hydraulic flow path and solids handling, reclaimed water, and discharge options for effluent.
  • Obtain a Class B CDL with Tanker endorsement.

First 12 Months of Employment:

  • Demonstrate understanding of wastewater division permits and discharge limits for three facilities.
  • Demonstrate safe working practices, use of SOPs, and adherence to City policies and procedures.
  • Identify and diagnose operational problems and recommend changes to maintain system stability.
  • Perform confined space entry utilizing department SOP.
  • Obtain ADEQ Wastewater Grade II certification.
