Meat Specialist – Associated Wholesale Grocers

Key Responsibilities- Make regular planned visits to member stores, serving as a liaison between the store and the warehouse.
- Interpret meat department operating statements and conduct operational analysis to advise store managers on improving operations.
- Perform analysis and planning to ensure meat merchandising objectives and priorities for assigned members are met.
- Develop weekly ad items and price selections.
- Conduct training for department managers and personnel.
- Maximize meat retail sales and warehouse purchases for assigned stores.
- Assist in developing meat case configurations, both fixtures and product layouts.
- Assist in developing sales programs such as seasonal meat merchandising, value‑added initiatives, handbills, and continuity programs.
- Collaborate with others to meet total job responsibilities cooperatively, with integrity, tact, and consideration for members, superiors, and co‑workers.
- Stay informed about competitors’ meat merchandising strategies, analyze impacts, and develop counter‑measures as required.
- Maintain accurate, up‑to‑date records and submit them on time to keep management informed of planning, work performed, and results achieved.
- Ensure all assigned stores participate in all warehouse programs.
- Promote special selling events such as truckload sales, 12‑hour sales, and 3‑day events.
Performs other responsibilities as requested.
QualificationsAny combination of education, training and experience providing the following knowledge, skills, and abilities.
KnowledgeUnderstanding of retail/wholesale meat operations and merchandising; standard English usage.
Abilities- Operate scales, wrappers, and hand jacks.
- Read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
- Write routine reports and correspondence.
- Speak effectively before groups of customers, employees, or senior company management.
- Calculate figures and amounts: discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.
- Apply basic algebra and geometry concepts.
- Solution‑oriented: solve practical problems and manage variables with limited standardization.
- Interpret various instructions in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
High school diploma; management experience in retail/wholesale meat operations.
Physical RequirementsRegularly required to sit; use hands to handle or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. Frequently required to stand; walk; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and taste or smell. Must occasionally lift or move up to 70 pounds. Must be able to drive a car to stores.
Working EnvironmentIndoors with adequate cooling, heating, and lighting; outdoors as needed.
Licensing/CertificationsDriver’s license.
