Summary Objective
The purpose of this position is to provide technical work in the safe and compliant spraying and/or spreading of nutrients and pesticides on city parks, sports turf, golf course and other city properties. Ensure targeted areas receive the proper application rates of micro and macro nutrients and pesticides to reach the targeted levels of aesthetic and economic thresholds.
Hiring range is negotiable between $42,495 and $55,239 depending on a candidate's qualifications and experience.
This job works under general supervision, independently developing work methods and sequences. This employee will track an evolving BMP that encompasses environmentally safe results and will be responsible for being compliant with all NCDA, OSHA, NCDNR and EPA regulations. This will include the tracking and logging of all RUPs and required labeling.
Essential Functions- Maintains clean and safe operating equipment, which includes keeping the servicing up to date and all service records.
- Operates all spray equipment to comply with all health and safety standards.
- Identifies pest control and schedules treatments throughout the year.
- Communicates with the athletics coordinators or assigned personnel at school facilities and City departments to schedule pest control applications.
- Calibrates and makes corrections to spray equipment to ensure a consistent product.
- Collects soil, water and tissue samples for testing and evaluates results to make future applications.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
- Knowledge of laws concerning the proper use, storage, and handling of pesticides related to turf, roadsides and aquatic environments.
- Knowledge of turf and ornamentals (agriculture) and effects of pesticides in the environment.
- Knowledge of PPE usage and importance.
- Mechanical repair and preventative maintenance skills for equipment.
- Problem-solving ability.
- Ability to operate equipment, monitor gauges, and ensure a quality product free of void or overlap.
- Ability to lead and supervise Park Technicians, including planning, delegating and monitoring work.
- Ability to respond with courtesy to citizens and to work with others in a team environment.
- Effective oral and written communication; ability to establish and maintain working relationships with superiors, employees and citizens involved in sporting and recreational activities.
- Sound judgment, courtesy, and tact in dealing with the public.
- High school diploma or GED, supplemented by training in varied skilled trades;
- Three (3) years of experience related to parks maintenance, grounds keeping, landscape maintenance, turf management, or related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
- Valid state driver’s license with acceptable driving history.
- Possession of a valid North Carolina Spray License.
- Ability to obtain certification in CPR, AED and First Aid.
Physical demands refer to requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement. This role involves medium work with walking, standing, stooping, lifting, pushing and raising objects; exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force regularly and 50 to 100 pounds occasionally.
