Park Technician

Overview

Hiring range is negotiable between $36,709 and $47,714 depending on a candidate's qualifications and experience.

The purpose of this position is to maintain the grounds throughout the facilities maintained by City of Goldsboro Parks and Recreation department; including but not limited to mowing, edging, blowing, weed whacking, laying concrete, installing sod, etc.

This job works under close to general supervision according to set procedures but determines how or when to complete tasks.

The essential functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class as necessary.

• Performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled tasks in grounds maintenance and landscape disciplines.
• Operates lawn mowers to cut grass at different parks and facilities.
• Maintains equipment such as mowers, weed eaters, edgers, chainsaws, tree trimmers, john Deere gators, golf carts, hurricane blowers and backpack blowers.
• Changes oil in lawn mowers; sharpens and changes the blades used to cut the grass; operates and maintains ventracs.
• Maintains the greenway, keeps it mowed, weed eated and properly blown off.
• Maintains bike trails to ensure a safe environment for bikers.
• Puts out salt for the snowy and icy days.
• Works extra hours after hurricanes to help clean up and maintain the cities cleanliness.
• Plants trees, flowers, and shrubbery.
• Assist in picking trash and changing trash bags as needed on center street; trim hedges around park house;
  Herman Park center, around plane on center street; cut trees up that has fallen down the parks.
• Loads and unloads stone, gravel, dirt, compost, mulch and other supplies as needed.
• Rakes and loads grass, leaves and brush; mows lawns and cleans grounds.
• Digs and backfills ditches; assists with maintenance of parks and recreational facilities.
• Provides assistance to others as needed by carrying materials, tools and equipment.
• Prepares and maintains park facilities and grounds for events, reservations and day to day use by citizens and guests.
• Maintains and stocks parts needed.
• Cleans up bathrooms and restock bathroom supplies in all facilities.
• Performs a variety of other heavy manual work in connection with the maintenance and construction of facilities.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

• Knowledge of the safe use, operation and preventive maintenance of the equipment to which assigned.
• Knowledge of the traffic laws and regulations governing equipment operation.
• Knowledge of the occupational hazards and proper safety precautions involved in the operation of assigned equipment. Ability to interpret and apply compliance with OSHA regulations, including PPE.
• Knowledge in turf, shrub and tree care.
• Knowledge in irrigation repair and installation.
• Knowledge of the application of turf products to control weeds and fertilization.
• Skill with equipment mechanical repair and preventative maintenance.
• Skill in problem solving.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other co-workers, supervisors, and the general public.
• Ability to respond with courtesy to citizens.
• Ability to plan, obtain materials needed, and complete tasks on schedule.
• Ability to work with others in a team atmosphere.
• Ability to understand and follow specific oral instructions.
• Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods, often under unfavorable weather conditions.
• Ability to read, write and communicate directions.

• High School Diploma or GED equivalent, supplemented by training in varied skilled trades with considerable related skills in parks maintenance or grounds keeping;
• One (1) year of experience in landscape maintenance, turf management; and in the operation and maintenance of landscape equipment and other mechanical equipment;
• Or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.

• Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license with an acceptable driving history.
• Ability to obtain NC certified pesticide applicators license within one year of hire date.
