Overview
The Lab Assistant II collects blood from all patients, performs venipuncture or capillary puncture using approved techniques, instructs patients in the collection of urine specimens, processes and delivers specimens to the appropriate sections of the Laboratory, and collects all laboratory specimens using proper identification and tagging procedures. Answers the phones, receives orders for testing and places those orders in the computer.
Responsibilities- Greets and interacts with all patients in a professional manner.
- Performs patient preparation and specimen collection, including venipuncture and capillary puncture using approved techniques. Collects and processes urine drug screens and ensures proper specimen type and amount.
- Receives orders from providers and enters orders into the LIS, applying correct diagnosis and billing codes. Enters additional data related to specimen collection to ensure accurate documentation and billing.
- Verifies correct test and patient identity.
- Collects specimens, accurately identifies and labels them, and records the date and time of collection according to established procedures.
- Prepares specimens for transport and delivers them to the appropriate technical area in a timely manner.
- Receives and distributes test results.
- Operates HIS, LIS and EPIC technology proficiently.
- Provides information or assistance to appropriate personnel regarding patients who present difficulties.
- Collects specimens from patients who are seriously injured whenever physically possible.
- Informs supervisor of shortages of supplies or consumables.
- Uses appropriate interaction with and provides recommended or required services to all patients. Maintains awareness of the needs of neonatal, pediatric, adolescent and geriatric patients and the cultural needs of all patients.
- Maintains a safe environment, applies universal precautions, and uses personal protective equipment and infection control barriers as required.
- Completes continuing education and in-service programs to meet regulatory and job requirements.
- Actively participates in staff meetings and quality/performance improvement activities.
- Communicates effectively with teammates and supervisors to assure the quality and integrity of the service. Maintains a professional demeanor, high standards of customer service, and teamwork.
Education
- High School Diploma or equivalent required; higher education from an accredited college will supersede this requirement.
- Successful completion of a phlebotomy course.
Licensure/Certification
- Certification from an accredited agency (NPA, ASCP, NHA, National Credentialing Agency for Laboratory Personnel) required.
Experience
- At least 1 year as a Clinical Laboratory Assistant.
Knowledge, Skills And Abilities
- Proficient in basic laboratory procedures and terminology.
- Good interpersonal skills.
- Ability to perform detailed work, handle frequent interruptions, multi-task, and solve problems.
- Ability to take direction and assimilate instructions quickly.
- Ability to read, write and communicate effectively in English.
- Proficient with LIS, HIS and MS Office; able to learn new software rapidly.
- Ability to stand and walk on hard surfaces for the duration of the shift.
Valid NC Driver’s License:
No
If driving a Wayne UNC Vehicle, must be 21 years old and MVR must be approved by Risk Management.
