This position is a direct care/essential role that provides direct and engaging supervision of Youth in DYS State Operated Secure Facilities. Specific duties and expectations are:
- Safety/Security – provide direct care, safety, security, and supervision of adjudicated and/or pre‑adjudicated youth in a secure setting. Monitor behavioral management plans, supervise youth or groups, intervene in crisis situations, de‑escalate conflict, use physical response/restraint when necessary, debrief incidents, and conduct searches.
- Youth Center Programming – implement the Youth Center’s behavioral management program, teach, coach, and redirect youth. Support DYS initiatives and strategies related to programming and crisis intervention.
- Documentation/Recording and Reporting – record observations of youth behavior, document all unit activities in logs, databases, and required systems.
- Organizational Accountability – demonstrate and support a healthy, positive, respectful cultural climate; adhere to CDHS Code of Conduct, DYS Compliance Review Standards, and policies.
- Training – complete DYS Pre‑Service training academy, Youth Center training, orientation, and all assigned online training. Maintain current knowledge of behavior management and intervention strategies.
- High school diploma or GED.
- Physical ability to stand on feet during shift, climb stairs, and intervene with assaultive youth.
- Minimum age 21, no felony convictions or history of domestic violence, valid Colorado driver’s license.
- Pass CBI and FBI background investigations.
- Work in shift hours, be willing to work evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays; mandatory overtime may be required.
- Successful completion of DYS Pre‑Service Training Academy, Field Training Program (FTO), and mandatory annual training.
- College education in behavioral health and/or juvenile justice.
- Experience working with adjudicated and/or detained youth in a secure residential facility or behavioral health setting.
- Facilitating psycho‑educational groups; experience with adolescents who have trauma.
- Positive leadership roles such as mentoring and coaching.
- Use of verbal de‑escalation and motivational techniques.
- Skilled in conflict management.
- Strong work ethic, integrity, and dependability.
- Sound judgment and decision‑making skills.
- Self‑control, composure, and ability to manage stressful situations.
- Clear verbal communication and willingness to communicate respectfully.
- Ability to identify and act on changes, hazards, or security breaches and report them.
- Ability to document events writtenly, factually, concisely, and legibly.
Employees work shift hours that may include evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays and may be eight, ten, or twelve hours. Shift work may vary between agencies. During inclement weather, essential staff may be required on site.
Conditions Of Employment- Travel to assigned trainings or alternate work sites may be required.
