Definition

Perform a wide variety of semi-skilled duties in the construction, maintenance, and repair of?

City Parks, Open Space, trails, and landscaped areas; perform skilled landscape maintenance. This position must work well independently and with teams while providing customer service and human relations skills which support the City of Brighton's mission and values.

Examples of Essential Responsibilities and Duties
  • Under general supervision, perform skilled maintenance operations on Park, Open Space and Farm properties.
  • Plants, waters, caretakes and maintain landscaped areas on city properties consisting of trees, annual flowers, perennials, shrubs, grasses and amenities.
  • Prunes and mulches trees and shrubs; applies herbicides, fungicides, and pesticides safely; maintains records of fertilizers and chemicals used.
  • Performs snow removal duties as required.
  • Constructing and maintaining trails and associated asset infrastructure including kiosks, fishing docks, benches, shelters, signs, fencing, and emptying trash cans.
  • Operates maintenance equipment such as dump trucks, tractors, backhoes, front loaders, UTVs, chippers, riding mowers and battery powered tools such as edgers, string trimmers, hedge trimmers and blowers. Maintains hand tools and assigned equipment.
  • Assist with work projects involving partner organizations, contractors, volunteers, local clubs, and members of the community.
  • Responds to requests and inquiries from the public and internal city customers including Code Enforcement and P.D. Patrol.
  • Works closely with partner agencies and Colorado Parks and Wildlife ensuring local wildlife issues are handled with care under the law.
  • Identifies equipment needs for each assigned project.
  • Utilizes proper safety precautions related to work performed and interactions with the unhoused populations.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications Knowledge of:
  • Current methods, techniques and tools and the operational characteristics of mechanical equipment used in the construction and maintenance of landscaped areas and Open Spaces.
  • Uses and purposes of general construction tools and equipment.
  • Safe work practices while ensuring the safety of others.
Ability to:
  • Perform semi-skilled maintenance, construction, and repair work in Parks, Open Space, Farms, and Trails while maintaining a safe and clean work environment.
  • Operate a variety of vehicle and stationary mechanical equipment in a safe and effective manner in routine situations.
  • Effectively lead part-time workers on daily tasks and assignments.
  • Be proactive, working independently in a leadership role in the absence of supervision.
  • Identify plants, grasses, shrubs, and trees common in Colorado landscapes and correct landscape problems early in their development.
  • Use and operate hand tools, mechanical equipment, power tools and vehicles required to perform work in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, supervisors, peers and the public.
  • Provide 24-hour on-call response for emergency maintenance when assigned.
  • Ability to work some weekends, holidays, and after hours as needed for special events, programs, and snow removal.
Education and Experience
  • Maintenance Worker I: High School diploma or equivalent. One (1) year of experience in Open Space, landscaping, or closely related field desirable.
  • Maintenance Worker II: High School diploma or equivalent and two (2) years of increasingly responsible experience performing landscape maintenance and repair. A Colorado Department of Agriculture Certified Operator License is required within 6 months of hire.
  • Maintenance Worker III: High School diploma or equivalent and associate’s degree with four (4) years of increasingly responsible experience performing landscape maintenance and repair. Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered. Bachelor's Degree preferred. At least one certification related to Parks, Open Space, or Forestry required at hire and at least one additional certification related to Parks, Open Space, or Forestry, is required within 6 months of hire.

    A Colorado Department of Agriculture Certified Operator License is required for one of these.
Physical Requirements

Must have the ability to perform heavy manual labor:eling, digging, lifting, pushing, pulling, and dragging. Lift and carry up to 50 pounds. Stoop, bend, and crouch for extended periods of time.
