Trust Registrar (St3+) in Renal and General Medicine
The closing date is 09 February 2026
We wish to appoint new Trust Grade Registrar (ST3+) colleague to join our Renal service at Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (GHNHSFT). We are one of the largest Foundation Trusts in England with opportunities for new collaborative developments in line with the Renal Services Transformation Programme and GIRFT. We have an active Regional Operational Delivery network and have established a Renal Clinical Programme Group within our new IC S.
Our acute hospital base is Gloucestershire Royal Hospital in Gloucester where our two wards are located including an inpatient acute dialysis service. Two of our outpatient dialysis units are also on site with a satellite unit in Cinderford in the Forest of Dean. There is a 7‑day renal consultant presence on the Gloucester site. Inpatient referrals at Cheltenham General Hospital are seen as necessary, often in association with outpatient clinics 2‑3 times per week.
Urgent referrals will be transferred to Gloucester, if necessary, working with our intensivist colleagues in Cheltenham to stabilise prior to transfer. We have a Renal Assessment Procedure Unit which offers several services including but not exclusively Peritoneal dialysis catheter insertions under local anaesthesia, Tunnelled haemodialysis catheter insertions, review of unwell peritoneal dialysis patients, all of which has enabled us to significantly reduce the number of patients presenting to ED and admissions.
Mainduties of the job
The post is based at the Gloucester Royal site. Our inpatient wards are on the 7th floor with 51 beds along with some responsibility for outlying wards. There will be opportunities to attend clinic, gain practical procedure skills (e.g. dialysis lines and renal biopsies) and to manage acute renal referrals. There will also be a commitment to the acute medical "take".
The post is suitable for anyone who has full MRCP and appropriate experience working in a general medical speciality at registrar level. Successful candidates will be expected to provide senior support to the junior members of the team, partake in full on calls which would include weekends and nights and also run lead cardiac arrests.
The successful candidate will have an Educational Supervisor and will be encouraged to attend teaching such as weekly departmental teaching, grand rounds, M&M meetings and journal club. There is also plenty of opportunity to partake in Quality Improvement and service development.
